Not only did Sri Lanka prove a point with a comprehensive victory over India after the Suraj Randiv-incident on Sunday, skipper Kumar Sangakkara also opened some old wounds by saying, "Our best win against India was in Sharjah not here'.
Sangakkara was referring to the Champions Trophy final played in October, 2000. Apart from Sri Lanka's huge victory margin (245 runs), it would be satisfying that it was achieved against a stronger Indian side, captained by Sourav Ganguly and included Sachin Tendulkar.
It is remembered as Sanath Jayasuriya and Chaminda Vaas' match. Sri Lanka batted first and even though a young Sangakkara couldn't do much with the bat, getting out for eight, bowled by Tendulkar, they amassed 299 for five. Opener Jayasuriya hammered 189 off 161 balls with 21 fours and four sixes.
Vaas and Muttiah Muralitharan made it a rout when they bowled out India for 54 runs. Vaas claimed five wickets, including the top four ufffd Ganguly, Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh and Vinod Kambli. Robin Singh was the only Indian batsman to enter double figures.
Brief scores (Champions Trophy final in Sharjah, Oct 29, 2000): Sri Lanka 299 for 5 (S Jayasuriya 189, Russel Arnold not out 52) beat India 54 all out in 26.3 overs (Chaminda Vaas 5-14, Muttiah Muralitharan 3-6).
