The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will name the squad for the five-match series and a Twenty20 match today.
Pietersen was 'rested' during the recent home ODI series against India, the one-off clash with Ireland and the two Twenty20 fixtures against the West Indies.
According to Sky Sports, with the 2012 World Twenty20 taking place in Sri Lanka, England will be keen to utilize any practice on slow, turning sub-continental tracks and would want Pietersen in tow unless they considered him dispensable for that event.
