Condemning the incident, Queensland Police Minister Judy Spence has urged citizens to come up with information if they have anything regarding the disgraceful matter which marred Australia's six-wicket victory on Tuesday.
Stating it was a serious matter which hampered the game, she said if caught the person responsible for the act could be fined upto 8000 Australian dollars.
"It is unfortunate that some individual, we believe, has used a laser pointer on a player," she was quoted by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
"That is illegal under our Stadiums Act in Queensland and that person could be fined up to $8,000 for interfering with a player. It could also warrant a criminal assault," she added. Television replays picked up a green streak of light flash across the face of South Africa pacer Wayne Parnell as he dropped a difficult catch offered by Mike Hussey.
Hussey later went on to make an unbeaten 53 and shared a 69-run unbroken partnership with Cameron White to guide Australia home in a tense finish yesterday. Though the South African team did not complaint, Cricket Australia apologised to the visitors for the laser incident and said it would take measures to stop the repeat of such an incident in future.
