Rain halts play at Wankhede, Mumbai post 33 after 3.5 overs

Out of reckoning from the IPL 2024 playoffs, Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants will look to end their campaign on a winning note when they clash at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday. While Mumbai Indians were knocked out of the playoffs race long ago, Lucknow Super Giant's chances of making the last-four are extremely bleak even if they win their last IPL game by a huge margin. Three consecutive defeats have not only denied LSG crucial points, they have also battered their net run rate. A 98-run loss to KKR was followed by a 10-wicket hammering by Sunrisers Hyderabad with a 19-run defeat to Delhi Capitals all but ending their chances of getting into the playoffs after making the final-four in the previous edition. The seventh-placed LSG's NRR of -0.787 will not improve significantly for them to get back into contention, as Royal Challengers Bengaluru, at No. 6, are much better placed with a NRR of 0.387. Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians were the first team to be knocked out of the race for the playoffs this year as they endured a horror first season under new skipper Hardik Pandya. Also Read: Headaches in offing! India’s predicaments ahead of World Cup With only four wins from 13 matches so far, Mumbai Indians can at best finish with 10 points if they win on Friday, something that can possibly help them avoid a last-place finish. For Mumbai Indians, a pre-season change of leadership, with Pandya replacing Rohit Sharma as captain, set off angry reactions from fans, which seem to have marred their campaign to a large extent. As a team, MI failed to get behind their captain. While their batting failed collectively, Jasprit Bumrah's individual brilliance with the ball (20 wickets in 13 matches), could not inspire the other bowlers to come together. The focus of the match would be on the likes of T20 World Cup-bound players such as Pandya, Rohit Sharma, Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav given that they would be pivotal to India's hopes of bringing back the elusive trophy. Rohit is enduring a horror run with the bat with his best being 19 in the last six outings for MI, while Pandya too has not been able to inspire confidence in his all-round role. Suryakumar, though, has regained confidence with a strong showing in the IPL following three fifties and a century. For LSG, the lack of firepower and failure to capitalise on key moments has led to their plight even though skipper KL Rahul has had a successful run with the bat, scoring three half-centuries in his 465 runs this season at an average of 136.36. His strike rate, however, remained a topic of debate throughout even as the other batters failed to pull their weight. While Nicholas Pooran (424 runs at 168.92) provided the late impetus, the collective failure of LSG's bowlers has also remained an area of concern. MI off to a fine start in their chase of 215 runs. Ishan Kishan has been replaced by Dewald Brevis as Rohit's partner tonight. 9:30 PM: 214/6 (20 Overs) Lucknkow Super Giants post a massive total of 214 runs, thanks to Pooran's 29-ball 75 and a handy cameo from Badoni in the end. 9:10 PM: 187/6 (18.2 Overs) KL Rahul gets caught by Thushara bowled by Piyush Chawla. LSG go six down as they lose their skipper in the end after Pooran. 8:50 PM: 161/3 (15.2 Overs) Nicholas Pooran sets the mood for Lucknow, as he looks set on 66 off 23 balls at the moment. KL Rahul on the other end also needs to get going now. 8:43 PM: 98/3 (12.2 Overs) Nicholas Pooran with a four and six. KL Rahul is also getting his rhythm back, he is batting on 40 off 33 balls. MI get another wicket in the powerplay, the leggie gets smashed for a couple of sixes but keeps his cool until the end of the over. 8:00 PM: 35/1 (5 Overs) Tendulkar keeps things tight for Lucknow. LSG off to a steady start after losing Padikkal early. 7:50 PM: 14/1 (3 Overs) Arjun Tendulkar with a tremendous over for MI. LSG take a LBW review which was given out and Marcus Stoinis is saved by that one. 7:30 PM: 4/1 (1 Over) Devdutt Padikkal LBW by Thushara. LSG have lost their first wicket and the dry run for Padikkal continues. He will finish the season with a forgetful year for him.

Mid-Day Premium T20 World Cup 2024: Headaches in offing! India’s predicaments ahead of World Cup

About 17 years have passed since India seized the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa, heralding a new era of grandeur in world cricket. Yet, a second triumph in the same format, one that India has notably shaped through the IPL, has remained elusive for the Men in Blue ever since. As the T20 World Cup 2024 looms in West Indies and the USA, only a few weeks away, critical apprehensions loom over Rohit Sharma and Co. on the cusp of the 20-over showpiece. Suryakumar Yadav's litmus test Despite Suryakumar Yadav’s stellar century against Sunrisers Hyderabad this IPL, his form has been erratic. Furthermore, lingering memories of last year's 50-over World Cup, where he struggled against the Australian attack, compound uncertainties, if anything at all. If India opts for Jaiswal and Sharma as openers, Yadav might face heightened pressure due to limited deliveries to settle in. Yet, if he finds his rhythm in the T20 World Cup 2024, he will undoubtedly be India's most formidable match-winner with the bat. No Gill and Rinku The conspicuous absence of Shubman Gill, IPL 2023's top run-scorer, had initially raised quite a few eyebrows, yet a comparison of his T20 acceleration rates with Jaiswal's offers insight into the decision by Indian selectors. However, the absence of Rinku Singh, with his formidable average of 89 and a strike rate of 176 in T20Is, truly underscores the side's void. His adaptability across positions and knack for six-hitting would have definitely bolstered India's lineup, particularly in high-scoring chases reminiscent of recent IPL encounters. Quest for Rohit Sharma's ‘perfect’ partner In the intricate dynamics of T20I format, optimising deliveries for top-order batsmen stands as paramount. In this light, several pundits are suggesting that India must consider the prospect of pairing talismanic batter Virat Kohli with Sharma at the opening slot. While Sharma appears destined for one end, the selection of youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal alongside him seems probable, with Kohli asserting his dominance at number three instead, a position he has commandeered for almost a decade. Despite Kohli's limited T20I appearances as an opener, his staggering average of 57.14 and a blistering strike rate of 161.29 underscore his prowess.  Also Read: Team India's five fold strategy for World Cup dominance Spin scrutiny Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, and Yuzvendra Chahal form India's spin arsenal in the World Cup, with Chahal earning a surprise comeback. Yet, determining the spin combination for starting spots remains a conundrum, truth be told. Jadeja and Axar's batting proficiency bolsters their candidacy, while Kuldeep's recent form edges him over Chahal in the pecking order. Given the absence of dew factors in day matches, the simultaneous inclusion of Kuldeep and Chahal seems unlikely.  India’s pace predicament With no more than three slots being allocated to pacers in the 15-member squad, India banks heavily on Hardik Pandya's fitness and bowling prowess. However, his injury history raises concerns regarding his capability to bowl with consistency. As the action shifts to the Caribbean, India's over-reliance on Pandya's bowling could prove detrimental, necessitating strategic utilisation of either Shivam Dube or a lineup featuring all three frontline pacers. Also Read: Is BCCI's head coach application call a mere formality or genuine opportunity? Continued pressure of an ICC trophy Following the anguish from last year, India grapples with the pressing question of reclaiming dominance in ICC tournaments. Since the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy title, India's journey has been fraught with semifinal exits and finale defeats. Despite fielding balanced squads, doubts linger: Is the best starting lineup secured? Can they withstand pressure? These uncertainties contrast the era of MS Dhoni, with his departure, India's once unshakeable confidence on the grand stage appears to wane each time they take the field. Whether this year will usher in a change of fortunes, only time will tell!

'Gambhir felt conflicts would bring the best out of him': Ex-player Atul Wassan

Days after Kolkata Knight Riders mentor Gautam Gambhir made headlines for criticising AB de Villiers and Kevin Pietersen, former cricketer Atul Wassan, said if the 42-year-old 'could just tone down a bit then he's got a lot of talent'. Earlier, De Villiers and Pietersen slammed Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Hardik Pandya for displaying a poor performance in the ongoing IPL 2024. Countering it in an interview Gambhir said, "De Villiers and Pietersen's records as captain are also not impressive." Speaking to ANI, Wassan said Gambhir is a great player and achieved many things in his cricketing career. He added the KKR mentor used to feel conflicts would bring the best out of him and it also worked for the left-handed batter. "Gautam Gambhir is my junior and he is a great player and achieved many things in his career. When Gambhir used to play, he used to feel that such conflicts, would bring the best out of him and it worked for him. Gambhir used to do much better when he used to fight with someone. If he could just tone down a bit then he's got a lot of talent. He can work well and he is a great mentor but this conflict thing becomes the team's dogma attitude he is with," Wassan said. Also Read: Headaches in offing! India’s predicaments ahead of World Cup The 56-year-old added that even he is not a big fan of where the captain gets all the credits when a team does well and is also criticized for the team's failure. "I am also a not big fan of putting all the accolades to the captain and all the failures on the captain's head. So, it's his point of view whether he liked the captaincy of Ab de Villiers or not. You can say Sachin was not a good captain and he will agree with this. Criticizing the ex-player captaincy just to replicate another captain who is not doing well is not right then you're just using past players as a benchmark and giving a perspective against the new captain," he added. The Mumbai-based franchise stands at the bottom of the IPL 2024 standings with eight points. Hardik Pandya's side displayed a sloppy performance in the 17th season of the tournament and won just four games after playing 13 matches. MI was also the first franchise in IPL 2024 to get knocked out of the playoffs. "I don't think he has achieved anything from a team's point of view, Hardik Pandya is still an IPL-winning captain. So you should only compare oranges to oranges. Not apple to oranges," Gambhir added in his interview with a media outlet. Under Gambhir's mentorship, KKR won 9 of 13 matches, and stand at the top of the IPL 2024 standings with 19 points and have a net run rate of +1.428. The Kolkata-based franchise only lost three matches in the 17th season which came against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Punjab Kings (PBKS). In their upcoming match, KKR will take on Rajasthan Royals on Sunday at the Assam Cricket Association Stadium in Guwahati. (With agency inputs)

'Have to play for our pride': Mumbai's Naman Dhir ahead of LSG clash at Wankhede

Ahead of his side's clash against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Mumbai Indians (MI) batter Naman Dhir said they have to play for their pride. The Mumbai-based franchise stands at the bottom of the IPL 2024 standings with eight points. Hardik Pandya's side displayed a sloppy performance in the 17th season of the tournament and won just four games after playing 13 matches. Also Read: Centuries for both openers, a rare in T20 cricket; record number of sixes in IPL Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Naman Dhir said they want to end the season on high by winning the match against the Lucknow-based franchise. "We have to play for our pride. We want to end the season on a high. We want to win the match," Naman Dhir said. He added that failures taught them better than the innings where they played well. He further pointed out that failure taught him how to stay calm in a situation. "I think failures taught us better than the innings we played well. I have learnt a lot from failures. How to stay calm in a situation. I have learnt a lot from failures and will implement it in the future," he added. Also Read: IPL 2024: KL Rahul pinpoints what went wrong for LSG in IPL 2024 Naman Dhir said the MI will learn from this season and will perform better in the upcoming edition of the tournament. "It was a mixed season in batting and bowling. Our batting was good in some matches, and in some, our bowling was good. So, it was like that. Still, we have put in a lot of effort. We will learn from here, and the next season will be even better," he added. (With inputs from agencies)

All-rounder Shoaib Malik backs Babar-Rizwan as Pakistan openers for World Cup

Amid the recent debate regarding Pakistan's opening pair in the T20 format, all-rounder Shoaib Malik wants to see the record-breaking duo of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan open for the Men in Green. The T20 World Cup 2024 is just a fortnight away and out of 20 teams, Pakistan are the only team that hasn't announced its squad. The last edition's finalists have continued to try out different combinations yet they ended up at the receiving end of criticism. Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja has been vocal about his concerns regarding the experimentation as well as the opening pair. Ramiz questioned Saim Ayub's spot in the team, especially in the opening slot. Malik talked about Aybu's high-risk approach contributing to inconsistency and suggested a pair based on the situation of the game. "Saim Ayub plays with high-risk and this kind of batter has less chance of being consistent. If there are high-scoring matches, Pakistan should open with Saim but if the matches are being played at a par score of 160 and 170, Babar-Rizwan should open," Malik told reporters as quoted from Geo News. During Pakistan's five-match home T20I series against New Zealand last month, Ayub in four matches scored 52 runs at an average of 14.25 with 32 as his highest score in the series. During the recently concluded three-match T20I series against Ireland, Ayub starred in the first match but overall struggled. In three matches he scored 65 runs at an average of 21.67 and a strike rate of 151.16. Also Read: Kirsten’s presence should be beneficial for us all: Babar With Ayub's dwindling form Babar and Rizwan once again established themselves as the most reliable batting duo for Pakistan. In the third T20I against Ireland, Babar forged a 139-run stand with Rizwan (56) for the second wicket. Their partnership laid the foundation for Pakistan's success after Saim Ayub failed to provide an ideal start for the team. This marked the 10th-century partnership between the two Pakistan star batters in T20Is. They became the first pair to achieve the feat. Their current form will certainly help Pakistan in their quest for World Cup glory. Malik is confident that Pakistan will walk into the tournament with confidence if they beat England in their upcoming four-match T20I series. "The players are in good form as we won the series against Ireland recently. If we manage to beat England in the upcoming T20I series, the confidence would be more high," Malik stated. Before heading for the T20 World Cup 2024, Pakistan's four-match T20I series will begin on May 22 at Headingley Carnegie and will conclude on May 30 at The Oval, London. (With agency inputs)

'There has to be life after Anderson': Strauss on veteran pacer’s retirement

Former England captain Andrew Strauss said veteran fast-bowler James Anderson, who is all set to retire after the Lord’s Test against West Indies in July, is one of the great bowlers of all time, but also stressed upon the need for the side to have a life after him in their bowling line-up. On Saturday, Anderson announced he would retire following the Lord’s Test against the West Indies, starting on July 10, bringing an end to a long-standing and illustrious career in the longest format of the game, earning 187 caps for England since his debut in 2003. Earlier this year, Anderson became the third bowler after Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan to reach the landmark of 700 Test wickets – the most by any fast-bowler - earlier this year during England’s fifth and final match of their India tour at Dharamshala in March. Anderson and Stuart Broad retiring in less than a year means England have really large shoes to fill in terms of their Test bowling line-up. "We've only got a certain number of fixtures (18, including Anderson's farewell against West Indies) between now and the next Ashes, and even Jimmy himself would admit that next Ashes is looking like a stretch.” “It's the right time to get some games into some new players and obviously a huge hole to fill. If you think about (Stuart) Broad going last summer and now Anderson, it's very hard to replace them overnight.” "They were both utterly dependable and were senior bowlers, so you need to invest time and effort, and other people need to step up and take those leadership roles. So I think it is the right time. Often, you don't fully appreciate what you've lost until it's gone - but there has to be life after James Anderson," Strauss was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo. Also Read: Centuries for both openers, a rare in T20 cricket; record number of sixes in IPL Strauss was the captain when Anderson became the leading wicket-taker in the 2010-11 Ashes triumph in Australia. He also revealed about his conversation with Anderson and wishes for him to be given a great send-off in his farewell Test at Lord’s. "It was just to congratulate him and have a chat about what his plans are moving forward. Rightly, he's going to take stock and he wants to get through this game well, and finish on a real high. I really hope he gets the send-off he deserves at Lord's.” "People have been talking about this moment for years - in a way, we got lured into thinking it was never going to come. It's been an extraordinary career with extraordinary resilience and will to keep going. Playing sport at the highest level is not an easy thing, and bowling's even harder. He's one of the great bowlers of all time," he added. Also Read: James Anderson says India 'nervous' against attacking England "He was just utterly dependable. He was one of those bowlers that you knew what you were going to get, every time. He had a great competitive fire and instinct, and extraordinary skill. Any captain would love to have him in their team. The other thing is that he kept fit: he never - or at least, very rarely - got injured. It's quite depressing to think that he made his England debut before I did. I've been retired for 12 years now!" he concluded. (With agency inputs)

Centuries for both openers, a rare in T20 cricket; record number of sixes in IPL

Centuries for both openers, a rarity in T20 cricket It's rare to see a century in T20 cricket. However, the match between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) saw two players scoring hundreds in one innings. Batting first, GT openers Shubman Gill (104) and B Sai Sudharsan (103) scored tons to put on 210 runs for the first wicket, thus becoming only the second opening pair in the IPL to smash centuries in the same innings after Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) openers David Warner and Jonny Bairstow did it against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2019. Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill (left) and Sai Sudharsan during their 210-run stand against CSK at Ahmedabad recently. PIC/PTI Fourth consecutive defeat for Rajasthan Royals  Though Rajasthan Royals have already qualified for the Playoffs, thanks to their four-match winning streak twice in the first nine matches, the then top-of-the-table team had a contrasting result this month, losing all four matches, two of them coming this week itself as they were restricted to less than 150 against CSK and Punjab Kings. The Sanju Samson-led side won't have an easy outing against table toppers Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their last league game. However, a victory over KKR will ensure a second-placed finish for the inaugural champions. RR players celebrate a Punjab Kings’s wicket on Wednesday. PIC/AFP Record number of sixes in IPL Apart from numerous records smashed this season, IPL-17 also witnessed the highest number of sixes hit in a single edition of the cash-rich league. A total of 20 sixes were smashed during the Delhi Capitals (DC) versus Lucknow Super Giants's (LSG) tie on Thursday, which took the tally to 1,125, surpassing 1,124 maximums smashed during the previous edition. As of Thursday, 1,133 sixes were hit in IPL-17. Apart from this, the KKR v Punjab Kings game last month witnessed 42 sixes, the most in a T20 match, while SRH opener Abhishek Sharma has sent 35 deliveries over the boundary line, the most this season.  SRH’s Abhishek Sharma smashes one for a six against LSG recently. PIC/AFP Unwanted record for Karthik RCB's Dinesh Karthik now holds the all-time record of 18 ducks in IPL history. The wicketkeeper-batter went past Mumbai Indians (MI) opener Rohit Sharma (17 ducks) and teammate Glenn Maxwell (17) after he was caught by Delhi Capitals's (DC) Kuldeep Yadav off pacer Khaleel Ahmed. Karthik getting out for a two-ball nought didn't affect the team's morale as the Bangalore side beat DC by 47 runs in a must-win tie. Rain pain for Gujarat Titans GT are the unluckiest team this season, with their last two matches being washed out without a ball being bowled. GT, who have won five matches this season, were knocked out of the Playoffs race after their home match against KKR was abandoned due to rain on Monday. Unfortunately, the 2022 champions’ last league match against SRH was also washed out. Last year’s runners-up thus ended the season with 12 points from 14 games. The washout, however, led to GT’s opponents, KKR and SRH confirming their Playoffs spot. Harbhajan Singh and MS Dhoni

Bhajji: In 2007, MSD was a new captain but great listener

Ahead of next month’s T20 World Cup, former India spinner Harbhajan Singh delved into the details of ex-captain MS Dhoni’s leadership skills that made Men in Blue the inaugural champions of the format back in 2007.  In the nail-biting summit clash between the two arch-rivals—India and Pakistan, the result was decided on the final over as Dhoni-led side won the match by five runs in Johannesburg, South Africa. The veteran spinner credited Dhoni for his decision-making and involving team members before taking the final call. “Not many people know, Dhoni was a very new captain, so he needed that support from all of us. Before matches against teams like Australia, New Zealand, and England, our core group would get together during the game to strategies for the next few overs,” Harbhajan said in a special Star Sports Press Room. Recalling the memory, the-43-year old complimented Dhoni’s collective leadership skills behind picking the right bowler for the final over of the summit clash. “Back then, batters didn’t score 25 runs in an over unlike today. The decision-making was always a team effort. When you play together as a united team, you win more competitions. Dhoni was a great listener, taking collective decisions that benefited the team. It was never about individual performances but about playing as ‘we’,” he said.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Hasaranga, Shakib are joint No. 1 in list of T20 all-rounders

Hardik Pandya remains the top-ranked Indian in the ICC ranking list for T20 all-rounders at number seven while Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has joined Bangladesh’s Shakib al Hasan at the top of the pile. With 185 points, Pandya is placed seventh behind Australia’s Marcus Stoinis. Hasaranga moved up a place to be joint leader with Shakib with 228 points.  In the batters’ ranking list, India’s Suryakumar Yadav continues to be the No.1 with 861 points while England’s Phil Salt was a distant second with 802 points.  India’s young batter Yashaswi Jaiswal was placed sixth with 714 points. Nathan Ellis

'Happy to get some reward after challenging tournament,' says Nathan Ellis

Punjab Kings pacer Nathan Ellis was relieved to see his team register a much-needed win, against second-placed Rajasthan Royals, after what has been a very difficult IPL season for them.  Already out of Playoffs contention, PBKS are currently placed in the ninth place with 10 points after five wins and eight losses in 13 matches, while RR, who have stuttered after an excellent start, maintain their second position despite a run of four defeats in recent times. “Really happy for the guys to get some reward as it has been a bit of a challenging tournament for us,” Ellis said at the post-match press conference here on Wednesday.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies.
