On December 23 1981, Sir Geoffrey Boycott became the leading run scorer in Test cricket with 8,033 runs overtaking Sir Garfield Sobers. We take a look at some of the other milestones and records held by the former England batsman.

* Boycott has averaged above hundred on two occasions in English first class cricket – 100.12 in 1971 and 102.53 in 1979. He is one of the only two players to have achieved this feat.


* Boycott surpassed Jack Hobbs to have an average above 50 in first class cricket for a record eleven consecutive times.

* Geoff became the first England cricketer to score over 8,000 Test runs.

* Boycott’s average is the highest among completes career players in England ever since 1970.

* In all the Tests that Boycott scored a century, England never lost.

* He is the fourth highest run getter for England in Tests.

* He is the sixth most capped England player in Test cricket.

* He ranks 14 as quickest cricketer to reach 8,000 Test runs.

* Boycott is the first player to score and unbeaten 99 runs as well as to score 99 and then a Test hundred in the same match.

* Boycott had 16 opening partners for England in Tests.

* Boycott is also the first England player to bat all five days of a Test. This was during the match against Australia in 1977. He scored 191 runs spending 629 minutes at the crease.

* Out of his 22 Test centuries, Boycott has scored only one of them against India, which was also his last Test hundred.
