'Smaller grounds & flat tracks making 250-plus totals normal': Siraj

Royal Challengers Bengaluru pacer Mohammed Siraj on Sunday rued the lack of help for bowlers in T20 cricket, saying smaller grounds and flat pitches are making 250-plus totals the new normal. In IPL 2024, the 250-run mark has been breached eight times as batters have employed an ultra-aggressive approach, making full use of the 'Impact player' rule and flat surfaces on offer. "See, nowadays cricket is really different, now 250-260 is made in every second match, earlier 250 was a rare thing," said Siraj after RCB overhauled 201-run target set by Gujarat Titans in 16 overs. "There is no help for bowlers, there is smaller grounds and flat wickets, there is no swing in the ball, so lots of changes. Bowlers can just keep playing and keep getting hit." Life has been hard for the bowlers, especially IPL 2024 as teams have looked to go for big hits to keep the run-rate high even after the powerplay. "As a bowler, you have to keep the self-belief. I have seen lots of ups and downs in life, so I don't give up if 1-2 matches don't go my way. I look for a comeback," Siraj said. "After one month, there is the World Cup... so I tell myself that if I get hit on a good ball, it is fine but I need to keep bowling less bad balls. I have not really bowled too badly this IPL, now 40 runs (in quota of four overs) is normal in T20 cricket." Siraj, who has taken six wickets in nine IPL games so far, said luck plays a big role in T20 cricket but he tries to keep his steady mindset. "T20 is all about luck, you don't get wicket in good balls and sometimes even a full toss gets you a wicket. so luck matters a lot. I keep working on my flaws during training. My mindset is always like I am the best bowler, when I go to the field, my attitude and mindset remains the same and it helps in my execution." Also Read: 'People can talk about...': Kohli's fitting reply to strike-rate critics Gujarat Titans suffered their third loss in the last four games but Sai Sudharsan said although there is nothing wrong in particular as a team they need to win all games here to stand a chance to qualify. "I don't think many things are going wrong. As a team we are doing well, definitely. It's just the result. If we had won this game, maybe many things would have been good. Getting better and just showing up (for) the next game is what is very important," said Sudharsan, who hit a 49-ball 84. GT are now at seventh place with eight points in the IPL standings. "I think winning all the games is the only possibility which we can see. But I think taking it game by game, just getting better from this game. There were many positives this game as well. Thinking of qualifying is a little longer. So, just we have to play the way we want." The left-handed batter said the pitch eased out with time which helped RCB chase down the target without much ado. "Like 10-15 overs after when we were batting, it got a little better because when we started to play, the wicket was q little damp but eventually it got better under the lights. It remained the same, obviously, during the RCB's innings as well." (With agency inputs)

'People can talk about...': Kohli's fitting reply to strike-rate critics

Royal Challengers Bengaluru stalwart batter Virat Kohli gave a fitting reply to critics about his strike rate in the T20 format after his 70* helped RCB to clinch the fastest win in the IPL history while chasing a 200-plus target in terms of balls remaining on Sunday. The Narendra Modi Stadium witnessed a boundary-hitting spectacle from Kohli and Will Jacks as RCB raced to a 9-wicket win with 24 balls to space against Gujarat Titans during a nail-biting IPL 2024 encounter. Kohli, who once again starred in RCB's triumph, was the talk of the town for his knock of 51 runs from 43 deliveries against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, a masterclass from Kohli's bat on Sunday saw him score 70* in 44 deliveries at a strike rate of 159.09 which helped the stalwart batter silence his critics even though the outside noise doesn't faze him. "Not really, all the people who talk about strike rates and me not playing spin well are the ones talking about this stuff. For me, it's about winning the games for the team and there's a reason why you've done it for 15 years, you've done this day in and day out, you've won games for your teams, I'm not quite sure that if you haven't been in that situation yourself, to sit and talk about the game from the box. For me, people can talk about their assumptions day in and day out, but those who have done it day in and day out, they know what's happening and it's a kind of muscle memory for me now," Kohli said after the game. All possible scenarios RCB have struggled to find the much-needed purple patch to keep their chances of sealing a spot in the playoffs alive. They endured six consecutive defeats before winning two games on the trot which includes their emphatic nine-wicket win. "We wanted to step up for ourselves, play for our self-respect. We can't be playing the way we played in the first half of the tournament, we wanted to see the ball as well, we are attacking way more, the fielders are putting their bodies on the line, that's the way we want to play. We haven't been up to standards so far except the last two games, but we just want to continue the same way, we have a great atmosphere in the dressing room. We want to play for ourselves, have some self-respect as to why we're playing at this level and also for the fans who've been supporting us," Kohli added. Coming to the match, after putting GT to bat, Sai Sudharsan (86*) and Shahrukh Khan's (58) blitz powered the hosts to a competitive total of 200/3. In reply, after skipper Faf du Plessis's dismissal, Kohli and Jacks rattled GT's bowling unit with their 166*-run stand to clinch a 9-wicket win for RCB. (With agency inputs)

Bangladesh tottered hard to get past the 100-run mark as India thoroughly maintained their position in the driver's seat (Pic: @bcciwomen/X)

Renuka's heroics propel India to a thumping 44-run win over Bangladesh

A clinical outing with the ball helped India register a comprehensive 44-run victory over the Bangladesh women's team in the BAN vs IND 1st T20I at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Sunday. Bangladesh tottered hard to get past the 100-run mark as India thoroughly maintained their position in the driver's seat. India's dominance was foreshadowed in the powerplay with the pace duo of Renuka Singh Thakur and Pooja Vastrakar combining to strike twice in the powerplay. After the two dismissals, the writing was on the wall for Bangladesh. Skipper Nigar Sultana waged a lone battle from no end but hardly found any support from her teammates. With a steady approach, she scored a half-century but her individual efforts were not enough to take her side across the finish line. On their way to 101/8, Bangladesh were helped by a couple of misfields from the Indian fielders as they conceded some boundaries that were avoidable. The wickets were shared amongst the Indian bowlers, but Renuka starred with 3/18. Also Read: Humidity lingers, traffic worsens, but cricket wins the race: A diary of an Indian on tour Earlier in the BAN vs IND 1st T20I innings, India stumbled early but got off to a flying start after winning the toss and putting Bangladesh to bowl. Left-arm quick Fariha Trisna castled Smriti Mandhana (9) in the third over. Shafali Verma and Yastika Bhatia steadied India's dwindling ship with their composure. Shafali settled the nerves with a towering six off Bangladesh skipper Nigar Sultana in the fourth over. Yastika found the boundary rope twice in the seventh over, ensuring that runs kept coming at a healthy rate. Rabeya Khan was introduced into the attack and got the breakthrough with her spin. A leading-edge brought an end to a 43-run stand as she removed Shafali from the crease for a score of 31. India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur managed to get a positive start after Yastika's (36) dismissal. Her short time on the crease with Richa Ghosh hinted towards India breaching the 170-run mark. But Bangladesh were tidy with their lines and restricted India to 145/7. Brief scores: India 145/7 (Yastika Bhatia 36, Shafali Verma 31; Rabeya Khan 3-23) vs Bangladesh 101/8 (Nigar Sultana 51; Renuka Singh 3-18, Pooja Vastrakar 2-25).

Pakistan women cricketers flout camp curfew, sustain injuries in road mishap

At least two players suffered serious injuries in a road accident involving some national women's team members earlier this month after they breached curfew and went out of the camp called for the ongoing white-ball PAK-W vs WI-W home series, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said on Sunday. The PCB has taken disciplinary action against the players, its chairman Mohsin Naqvi told reporters. He said five to six players of the national women's team had gone out in the evening in Karachi without informing the team management during the April 2-8 camp. "They ended up getting involved in a road accident with at least two players getting intense injuries and they are now under treatment," he said. Also Read: Players get restless due to PCB director Hafeez's long meetings and lectures Naqvi said that since these players form half of the team, the PCB had not publicised the incident as well as the internal disciplinary action taken against these players. "What they did was wrong and as a result we have now appointed a full-time senior rank security police officer to be with the team round the clock and enforce proper timings." The PCB chief said the incident had an impact on the performance of the team in the PAK-W vs WI-W ODI series as one of the main players, Fatima Sana was injured. He did not describe the nature or the seriousness of the injury sustained by Sana who, surprisingly, featured in all the three matches of the ODI series which ended on April 23 and which Pakistan lost 0-3. Sana also played in the first of the five-match T20I series on April 26. Naqvi also said the Board was also in touch with some candidates to be appointed as head coach of the Pakistan women's team. "We are talking to a high profile foreign coach," he said. (With agency inputs)

Quest for the golden ticket!

It is believed that chairman of national selection committee Ajit Agarkar and skipper Rohit Sharma had an informal meeting in the national capital on a possible 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup on Saturday. The formal squad announcement might happen in Mumbai on May 1, which happens to be the cut-off date for the ICC event. It is understood that Agarkar specially flew into Delhi so he can chat up with Rohit ahead of Mumbai Indians' IPL encounter with Delhi Capitals and get a further clarity before he sits with his colleagues to pick the final team. There are a couple of slots which will be up for discussion as most of the team picks itself. There won't be many surprises and only thing that selection committee and team management needs to be convinced about is Hardik Pandya's bowling fitness. If Hardik is slotted in the 15, then only one among Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh can be accommodated while it seems that KL Rahul, one of the favourites of the current coaching dispensation headed by Rahul Dravid, has left his nearest competitor Sanju Samson far behind. Also Read: Rishabh Pant-KL Rahul being considered as wicketkeepers for T20 World Cup: Sources There is very little possibility of a left-field selection and one option could be Mumbai Indians batter Tilak Varma, who is a flamboyant southpaw and can also bowl handy off-spin in case opposition has more left-handers. However, it can't be ascertained how much is the possibility of that happening as Axar Patel and Ravi Bishnoi are fighting for the third spinner's slot. Yuzvendra Chahal, the country's most skillful white ball wrist spinner, is reportedly not a priority choice for an influential member of the coaching staff, who has a lot of say in selection matters. Pant-KL being considered as wicketkeepers for T20 World Cup: Sources

Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul are likely to get selected in India's T20 World Cup 2024 squad as wicketkeepers, while left-handed batter Shivam Dube could also earn a call following his brilliant performance in the shortest format in last few years, as per sources. BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar met Rohit Sharma to discuss about the T20 World Cup 2024 squad after the 43rd clash between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024. "Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul are likely to get selected for the World Cup squad as wicketkeepers. Shivam Dube is also likely to get picked in the squad," a BCCI selection committee source told ANI. DC skipper, Pant has scored 371 runs in 10 matches at an average of 46.38 and at a strike rate of 160.60. The left-hand batteries are at the fourth number in the list of orange cap for the ongoing 17th edition of the cash-rich league. Lucknow Super Giants skipper KL Rahul is the third highest-run getter in the ongoing IPL 2024, having scored 378 runs in the nine matches at an average of 42 and at a strike rate of 144.27. Also Read: ‘Bairstow not a gamble’ Dube is in hard-hitting form this season and not only he is a key player in CSK's title defence, but also is making a case for a slot in the upcoming World Cup. In eight matches, Dube has scored 311 runs at an average of 51.83 and at a strike rate of 169.94, with three half-centuries. His best score is 66*. Dube is the top-run scorer for his franchise this season, with his rival being Ruturaj Gaikwad (349 runs in eight matches at an average of 58.17, with two fifties, and one century). The T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies begins on June 1. India will be in action on June 5 when they take on Ireland before attention shifts to the high-octane clash against Pakistan on June 9, both of which will be played at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

Irfan Pathan (Pic: File Pic)

T20 World Cup 2024: India should pick two wrist-spinners, feels Irfan Pathan

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan feels that ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024, the "men in Blue" squad must consist of five specialist bowlers along with two wrist spinners. The T20 World Cup 2024 is set to begin in June in the USA and the West Indies. With May 1 being the deadline for the announcement of the final squad for the global showpiece, the discussions regarding India's squad have taken centre stage. "You need five good bowlers that's a must. What are your wicket-taking options? When you're talking about Ravindra Jadeja at No. 8 and playing as a spin (all-rounder), I would rather have two wrist-spinners playing", Pathan told Star Sports. I would rather have two proper wrist-spinners playing, (Ravi) Bishnoi and Kuldeep (Yadav), in my playing XI. If you look at Bishnoi's numbers, you know, when he played, he was pretty good." Also Read: IN PHOTOS | IPL 2024, RCB vs GT: Here's all you need to know When asked about Chahal, Pathan doesn't seem in favour of picking him in the World Cup squad. "Yes, we're talking about Chahal right now because of the IPL performances but don't forget the fielding part of it as well. If you have to balance the fielding, you have to balance where a bowler can bowl at the particular area", he said. Additionally, Pathan only considered pacer Jasprit Bumrah as the automatic selection among the bowlers. "There's only one player who you can blindly say (certain for selection) is Bumrah. But apart from Bumrah, you need at least two fast bowlers who can be part of the regular XI", the former India cricketer said. The biggest problem the Indian team has is the combination of fast bowling. It's very important to fix that combination, so go towards experience. "With Bumrah, you can see (Mohammed) Siraj and Arshdeep (Singh) there, which I don't think is ideal, but this is the only option you have now, he said. Former Indian batsman K Srikkanth doesn't want Mohammed Siraj to be a part of the Indian squad ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024. "Bumrah is in the squad. Arshdeep as well. But the third pacer can't be Siraj. He'll bowl well in one game and then not perform in 10 games. He's an erratic bowler, you saw it in the World Cup", he said. "That's why I'm saying we should look at who's bowling well in the death overs, and that is Avesh Khan. He's been performing well and he's done well on the international front, he has a little experience as well. He's mastered the wide yorkers also", Srikkanth added.  However, former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody backed Siraj saying that he is mentally and physically fatigued. "He looks mentally and physically fatigued. He has come into this IPL having played a lot of all format cricket for India for a long period of time", he said. "He plays his cricket in the IPL at probably the hardest venue (Bengaluru) whether you bowl quick or you bowl spin that needs to be taken into consideration. The third thing is he's playing in a poor side. RCB have been a poor side this year and it's very hard to rise with what's happening around you. I would back him 100 per cent to step up in the World Cup, purely because if you look at historically what he's done for India and even what he did in the IPL last year", Moody added. IPL 2024: Samson's 71 not out tops Rahul's 76 as Rajasthan beat Lucknow by seven

Skipper Sanju Samson did a world of good for his chances ahead of the T20 World Cup team selection by hammering a 33-ball unbeaten 71 and overshadowing a similar effort by Lucknow Super Giants captain K.L Rahul (76 off 48 balls) as Rajasthan Royals romped to a seven-wicket victory in Match 44 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Saturday. Samson, who struck his fourth half-century of IPL 2024 off 28 balls, shared an unbeaten 121-run partnership with Dhruv Jurel, who scored his maiden IPL half-century as Rajasthan Royals cruised to 199/3 in 19 overs in response to Lucknow Super Giants' 196/5 made possible by Rahul\s superb innings and his 115-run partnership with Deepak Hooda (50). Samson, who had scores of 82*, 69, 68* before Saturday's superb knock, blasted seven boundaries and four sixes in another brilliant innings to help Rajasthan Royals recover from two quick wickets and with help from Jurel, who scored 52 not out off 34 balls, raised 121 runs for the fourth wicket partnership to guide RR to a comfortable victory at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium here. Also Read: Nadal gets even with De Minaur at Madrid Open With this win, table toppers Rajasthan Royals moved up to 16 points from eight wins from nine matches, opening up a big six-point gap at the top of the table. LSG remained in fourth position with 10 points, the same as Kolkata Knight Riders (2nd), Sunrisers Hyderabad (3rd) and Delhi Capitals (5th). They have played nine matches while KKR and SRH have played eight matches each. DC are through with 10 matches so far. Chasing 197 for victory, Rajasthan Royals got off to a fine start with Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal raising 50 runs for the opening wicket partnership. Buttler struck 34 off 18 balls while Jaiswal managed 24 off the same number of balls. Both of them were untroubled by the LSG bowling, which lacked serious pace in the form of young tearaway Mayank Yadav, who was expected to recover from his injury and play this match. Buttler, who had blazed to an unbeaten 107 off 60 balls against KKR 10 days back, faced a couple of anxious moments against Matt Henry and Mohsin Khan, picked pace by hitting Henry for a big six, shuffling across and lapping it over the keeper. He struck a four and scored three off Henry followed by a boundary in the fifth over. He hit Yash Thakur for a four in the sixth over before the bowler returned to get revenge, castling the batter with a slower one. Jaiswal fell on the same score as RR slumped to 60/2 in the seventh over and when Riyan Parag followed him back into the dugout for 14 off 11 balls, Rajasthan Royals fell to 78/3 and the innings was looking to come apart. However, skipper Sanju Samson held the innings together and along with Dhruv Jurel raised an unbeaten 121-run partnership for the fourth wicket as Rajasthan Royals capitalised on some shoddy performance by LSG in the field. LSG grassed a couple of catches, failed to capitalise on a dreadful mix-up between Samson and Jurel to affect a runout and also misfielded on a couple of occasions. Rajasthan Royals had applied the brakes in the middle and death overs, but LSG could not do so with the ball as Sanju Samson finished the match with a flurry of shots, hitting Mohsin Khan for a big six after the bowler had failed to run him out at the non-striker's end. He followed that up with a six off the last ball of the over after he and Jurel scored a single each in between. In the 19th over, Samson hammered a four and a six off successive balls off Yash Thakur to finish the match and seal victory for RR. Samson had started slowly and waited for his chances before exploding into action. He came in at 60/1 and saw his team go down to 78/3, so his first seven shots were for singles. A four off veteran Amit Mishra was followed by a couple of boundaries against Thakur. Ravi Bishnoi was also mistreated as Samson hit him for back-to-back fours in the 16th over. A reverse-hit four off Krunal Pandya over point fielder was his best shot of the day before his power-hitting in the last couple of overs. Samson completed his half-century off 28 balls as he went after the bowling with 84 needed off 48 deliveries. Jurel was the more aggressive of the two Samson went berserk towards the end. In the 14th over, Jurel scythed, scooped and pulled Mohsin Khan for 4, 6, 4. Off the fourth ball of the over, Yash Thakur failed to time his jump and palmed the ball over at third man for a single. Jurel was dropped once again by Jurel off Mohsin Khan near the short-third region as the ball raced to the fence. Jurel completed his maiden IPL fifty with a single off Mohsin Khan, reaching the mark in 31 balls. Amit Mishra and Krunal Pandya were the best bowlers for LSG on the park on Saturday night as they fell short by a round 20 runs and then performed poorly in the field to further hamper their chances. Asked to bat first, KL Rahul blasted a 48-ball 76, reaching a cautious half-century off 31 balls, while Hooda scored a 31-ball 50 as LSG recovered from a precarious 11/2 in the second over to post a good score. LSG got off to a poor start as Quinton de Kock, after hitting back-to-back boundaries to Trent Boult in the first over, was cleaned up on the third ball by the left-handed New Zealand pacer with one that nipped back a bit and went past the opener's bat, which came down late, to crash into the stumps. Sandeep Sharma accounted for Marcus Stoinis on the last ball of the second over as the ball swung in and went past to disrupt the furniture, reducing LSG to 11/2 in two overs. However, LSG recovered well from the twin setbacks thanks to Rahul and Hooda as they raised 115 runs in quick time for the third wicket partnership. Rahul got his third half-century while Deepak Hooda got his first half-century in 19-odd matches. Rahul scooped, drove, pulled and swept superbly in an excellent rearguard knock, hitting eight fours and two sixes -- the only two sixes of the innings a far cry compared to the last couple of matches in which teams hit maximums in double figures. In contrast, RR batters hammered nine maximums. After a cautious start, Rahul opened up by hitting Boult for a four off an in-swinging yorker and was lucky to survive a ball from Ashwin that darted in, just managing to sweep it away to the boundary. The LSG captain continued to flourish, hitting back-to-back boundaries off Yuzvendra Chahal in the seventh over -- caressing a half-volley through covers and following it up with a sweep behind square and the spinner strayed to left. The 32-year-old right-handed batter hammered Avesh Khan for 21 in the eighth over, hitting his first six off the second delivery before hammering another six off a no-ball and following it up with a four off the free-hit. Just when it looked like he would reach the three-figure mark, Rahul got out as Avesh Khan got his revenge as Boult picked a simple catch at deep backward point. Hooda drove, cut, swept and used the switch-hit well to score an exact fifty, hitting Boult for boundaries off successive balls. His four off Chahal in the 12over was his best shot of the night as he hammered seven fours in his 31-ball 50. Rajasthan Royals pulled back things a bit in the death overs, conceding seven and six runs in the 18th and 19th overs before Ayush Badoni (18 not out) and Krunal Pandya (15*) scored 12 runs off the final over to ensure they reached a par score on this ground. Brief scores:Lucknow Super Giants 196/5 in 20 overs (K.L Rahul 76, Deepak Hoods 50; Sandeep Sharma 2-31) lost to Rajasthan Royals 199/3 in 19 overs (Jos Buttler 34, Sanju Samson 71 not out, Dhruv Jurel 52 not out; Amit Mishra 1-20, Marcus Stoinis 1-3) by seven wickets.
