Chennai Super Kings are on a roll. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and deputy Suresh Raina have played key roles but there could be another factor which has worked for them.

According to sources, after a disastrous start at home, CSK owners performed a Vastu Shastra puja for a change in fortune. Vastu Shastra is a traditional Hindu system of design based on directional alignments.

CSK lost their opening game to Deccan Chargers by 31 runs, but the defeat which convinced the CSK management that luck was not on their side came against Kings XI Punjab, where they succumbed in the one-over eliminator.

They chose to seek Vastu experts' advice and among various things, the Vastu expert advised a switch in dugouts. The outfield grass has also been cut in a particular pattern, making one wonder whether it's also a Vastu-related thing or just a plain design. In the first match, the grass inside the ring had been cut in thick and thin alternate parallel lines. In the second game, there were alternate thick and thin circular lines in the outfield between the boundary and the 30-yard circle.

Since the third home match against Bangalore Royal Challengers, the outfield has three circular rings with a 'V' symbol in light shades. A local official here called it Mahabharata's Chakravyuh.

"It's just a design which is changed every match," said a Tamil Nadu Cricket Association official. It is another matter that they have not changed the design after they started winning at home.

CSK have scored back-to-back home wins since then, so the move might be paying off. "N Srinivasan (CSK owner and BCCI secretary) is a very pious man. He's very particular about these things and performs pooja on the wicket before every season," informed a TNCA official.

After two frustrating seasons, it is learnt that the Mumbai Indians team management too felt their planets were not in alignment and made quite a few changes. Their original colour is blue but in the first two years their apparel had two shades of blues. This year it is just one, 'airforce blue'.

The spokes of the Sudarshan Chakra in their logo were anti-clockwise. But now they have changed its direction to clockwise.

The alphabets of 'Indians' were tapering at the bottom compared to the alphabets of 'Mumbai' and this year they have made Indians also straight.

It seems there would have been one hell of a star war yesterday night.
