The upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to kick off from March 28. Ahead of the league, Sunrisers Hyderabad's (SRH) head coach Daniel Vettori spoke about stand-in captain Ishan Kishan. He said that the left-handed batsman has been around for a long period in the league and he brings his own confidence. "I think Ishan's been around in the IPL for a long period of time now. He's been with a number of teams and he's been highly successful, so, he brings in his own confidence around that," he said. Kishan has been appointed SRH's stand-in captain as regular skipper Pat Cummins will miss the initial stage of the upcoming league. The pacer is dealing with a back injury. The head coach then said that Kishan has been appointed as the skipper, considering that he led his state team in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He also said that the left-handed batsman will lead the team from front along with his fellow teammate, Abhishek Sharma, who has been appointed as the vice-captain. "The fact that he's led the U19s and his state team and they won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy this year brings a confident person, a confident player and a really confident leader and those are the attributes that we really looked at when he was appointed. His combination with Abhishek, they're good friends, they know the team exceptionally well and I really feel like those two will lead from the front this season," said Vettori. The first match of the tournament is scheduled to be played between the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on March 28 at the M. Ahead of the league, Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) head coach Andy Flower provided an update on the availability of star pacer Josh Hazlewood for the first game. Speaking about the pacer, the head coach said that he looks younger and he has worked hard to regain his full fitness. "Hazlewood arrived yesterday. He's looking fit. I did comment to him that he looks even younger than I remember him, so he's enjoyed some good downtime, but he's worked hard to get himself back up to full fitness. It's great to have him here. It's even great to have him here in our dressing room and in the meetings," he said. The first match of the tournament is scheduled to be played between the defending champions, RCB and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on March 28 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Further speaking, the head coach stated that Hazlewood won't be making his appearance for the first match, and the management will be monitoring his fitness. "He won't be ready for tomorrow, because he's just got off the plane, and we'll be monitoring his fitness very closely and looking forward to him making his entrance into the IPL," said Flower. Earlier, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Secretary, Santosh Menon, confirmed that the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium will host five of the RCB's IPL 2026 home games. The venue will also host one of the play-off matches and the title clash of the tournament. 27 March,2026 08:01 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentThe upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to kick off from March 28. Ahead of the league, former Team India cricketer Aakash Chopra feels that Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) stalwart Virat Kohli will have a big season among the star players. Speaking about Kohli, the former cricketer explained the reason behind why he picked the right-handed batsman to have a stellar run in the tournament. "The focus will be on Virat Kohli again because the guy is so fit. The kind of fitness that he has achieved over a period of time makes him the best suited, also because he is an opener. The same is true for Rohit Sharma as well, but between the two of them, I still feel Virat Kohli has it a little easier just because of himself. That is the price he has to pay for the kind of fitness and legacy he has built," he said on JioStar. He also feels Rohit should continue to bat in the same aggressive fashion, as there will be players such as Hardik Pandya, Tilak Varma, Quinton de Kock, Suryakumar Kumar and others waiting in the Mumbai Indians' (MI) dugout. "When you are part of the batting order that the Mumbai Indians have, it is mandatory to set the tone for Rohit Sharma. Rohit does want to bat a certain way. He has already made his opinion very public. But if you are part of a setup where there is Quinton de Kock at the other end, followed by Tilak, Surya, Hardik, Will Jacks or Sherfane Rutherford, and then Naman Dhir, what else is the option? You need to maximise the 20 overs, which basically means maximising the first six overs," said Chopra. "So, yes, Rohit would be expected to bat the same way, see the ball, hit the ball; that is what I am thinking for the entire Mumbai Indians setup, unless the pitch is asking you to play a slightly different brand of cricket," he added. IPL 2026, Opening match: Date and venue The first match of the tournament is scheduled to be played between the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on March 28 at the M. Ahead of the league, Gujarat Titans' (GT) batsman Sai Sudharsan said that he has given himself the best opportunity to prepare for the tournament. The left-handed batsman also said that he will be giving his entire energy to help his team emerge victorious in the marquee event. "I will look at it in a very simple way that there is an important job in front of us to do. And I think I have given myself the best time to prepare. I have given myself the best opportunity to be equipped before the tournament starts. So I think that's the biggest thing which I have in my mind. I am not thinking about going ahead. I am not thinking about what is going to happen after the IPL or later in the year. I think right now, being in the present and giving our best to make our team win. I think that is the important thing as of now. So I am giving all the energy to that," he said. He then heaped praise on GT's head coach Ashish Nehra by saying that he is the players' coach, as he understands the strengths and weaknesses in a player. "Ashu bhai (Ashish Nehra) is one of the players' coach where he understands the player very well; he understands his strengths and weaknesses. He would tell me what I require. He would tell me what my batting requires. And I think that is the greatest ability of Ashu bhai," said Sudharsan. 27 March,2026 07:04 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentThe upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to kick off from March 28. Ahead of the league, former Team India cricketer Irfan Pathan heaped praise on KL Rahul by saying that he is undoubtedly one of the best players in the tournament. "KL Rahul is the safest bank to score 500 runs every season. He will always score runs and is capable of giving good starts consistently. He is undoubtedly one of the best players in this league. It is just that we sometimes talk about his strike rate, but as long as you win the match, you do not need to focus much on that," he said on his YouTube channel. The former cricketer then backed Prithvi Shaw and said that the right-handed batsman will come to prove a point. He also said that despite not scoring runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Shaw seems to be in a good form. "They got him at a very good price. He shifted to Maharashtra from Mumbai in domestic cricket. He was the highest run-scorer for Maharashtra in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Yes, he did not score in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, but he seems to be in good form. I think those hungry players who went unsold last year always come with a point to prove. Prithvi Shaw will come to prove a point," said Pathan. "The hungry players who have gotten dropped are very excited, but along with that, they also put a lot of pressure on themselves to perform. This pressure always leads you towards failure. They have the option of Abhishek Porel, who has performed really well whenever he has gotten chances. He has contributed with quick 20s and 30s so far. But I think they should go with Prithvi Shaw and give him clarity about his role," he added. Everyone is on the same page. There is confidence in everyone," he said on JioStar Press Room. When asked how the PBKS are planning to replicate the previous year's performance, he said that the players will be focusing on taking one match at a time. "We will take it match by match because ultimate aim is to get a trophy. If we keep thinking we reached the final last year, there will be a lot of pressure on us. So our immediate aim is to prepare for our first game against GT, then against CSK and KKR," said Shashank. Ahead of the league, former Team India cricketer Aakash Chopra has picked his contenders for the Orange Cap. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former cricketer feels Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill could be the top contenders for the Orange Cap. He also said that it could be a bumper season for Jaiswal. "The Orange Cap is generally on an opener's head, to be very honest. I am thinking that this might be a bumper season for Yashasvi Jaiswal, the bumper season you are waiting for. So I am extremely inclined to go towards him. The second guy could be Shubman Gill because he might be the hungriest," he said. Further speaking, he also feels that stalwart Virat Kohli and KL Rahul could also be among the players competing for the Orange Cap. "The third is, of course, Virat Kohli, because he does not play cricket for long periods these days. So Virat Kohli could be that Orange Cap winner. One of these three is what I am thinking and hoping for. If Delhi progresses, it could be on KL Rahul's head as well," added Chopra. The former cricketer was nothing short of praise for Jaiswal, saying that the previous three seasons have been outstanding for the left-handed batsman. "Score 600-650 runs. If you score that many runs, people will stand up and take notice, and, to be fair, the last three seasons have been outstanding for Yashasvi Jaiswal from a strike rate and runs perspective," he said. He signed off by saying that if Jaiswal delivers big performances in IPL 2026, the India cap for him would not be too far. "He has just not won the Orange Cap, but the guy has been consistently scoring runs. So I am hoping for Yashasvi Jaiswal to have a bumper season, and for him to be amongst the top run-getters. If that happens, the India cap would not be too far," said the 48-year-old former cricketer.
