Sri Lanka's Dunith Wellalage has returned home after his father, Suranga, passed away on Thursday, when the spinner was playing the Asia Cup 2025 group stage match against Afghanistan.
The 54-year-old died of heart attack and Wellalage was informed of his father's demise after the match, following which the spinner left for Colombo on the earliest available flight. So far, his return to Sri Lanka's Asia Cup 2025 campaign remains uncertain.
After qualifying for the 'Super 4' stage of the tournament, the Lankans are set to lock horns against Bangladesh on Saturday.
After the game against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka will face Pakistan on September 23 and India on September 26.
"Deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Suranga Wellalage, father of Dunith Wellalage. My heartfelt condolences to the family. Stay strong Dunith, the whole nation stands with you and your family in this difficult time," wrote former Sri Lanka slinger Lasith Malinga on X.
Veteran Afghanistan cricketer Mohammad Nabi also paid his condolences. In a post on his X handle, Nabi wrote, "Heartfelt condolences to Dunith Wellalage and his family on the loss of his beloved father. Stay strong brother."
During the match, bowling four overs, 22-year-old Wellalage conceded 49 runs for the loss of a wicket. It was just the fifth T20I for the young spinner.
The Charith Asalanka-led Sri Lanka registered a victory by six wickets against Afghanistan.
Sri Lanka's head coach, Sanath Jayasuriya, who informed the spinner about his father's demise, took to his official social media handle to pay condolences to the spinner.
"Dunith, your father was a cricketer himself, and he can be truly proud of the son he raised. His values, his love for the game, and his spirit live on through you. I know how strong you are, and I have no doubt that you will continue to make him proud by winning many games for Sri Lanka," Jayasuriya posted on Facebook.
"At this difficult moment, please remember that you are not alone. I will be there for you like a father -- guiding you, standing with you, and supporting you every step of the way. The entire team, the nation, and everyone who loves this sport are by your side," he added.
