Former England captain Michael Atherton reflected on the final over on Day Three of the Lord’s Test on Saturday, where India captain Shubman Gill had a fiery exchange with Zak Crawley over the latter’s cheeky delaying tactics in the final moments of play, saying he loved watching the “brilliant drama” and the “fantastic end to a nip-and-tuck day”.
With 10 minutes left, Crawley was wasting time at the crease, pulling away four times before facing the third ball from Jasprit Bumrah that made Gill run in from the slips, hurling verbals at Crawley and Ben Duckett.
Crawley was then hit on the glove and took a moment to take it off to check his hand and gestured for the physio to come on. Things began to heat up again and Gill made a sarcastic clap and gestured towards the pavilion. “There was chit-chat, but I didn’t mind that. It was a red-blooded contest and you have to give players a bit of leeway. I loved watching it and thought it was a fantastic end to a nip-and-tuck day. Brilliant drama, great theatre,” Atherton told Sky Sports.
Former England batter Jonathan Trott however, criticised Gill’s animated response. “A little bit of gamesmanship [there] and we don’t know what went on when England were fielding, whether they were dishing it out too. But I didn’t like the acting from Shubman Gill. As a captain, you set the tone, and pointing fingers and getting confrontational feels reminiscent of a previous captain, who used to get in the opposition’s face,” Trott told JioHotstar.
