Continuing his rich vein of form, talismanic batter Virat Kohli smoked a record 50th ODI century off 106 balls during India's ICC World Cup 2023 semi-final clash against New Zealand on Wednesday. The former captain surpassed fellow India great Sachin Tendulkar's most ODI centuries in the process.

The 35-year-old has scripted countless records in the sport across formats and continues to do so, including in the the ongoing ODI World Cup. Kohli's feats include scoring the most runs in international cricket among contemporary players.

He also became the third Indian batter to score 600 runs in a World Cup edition on Wednesday. Notably, Tendulkar was the first to achieve this feat, having amassed 673 runs during the 2003 edition when India finished as runners-up. Rohit Sharma followed suit with his 648 runs during the 2019 World Cup.

The dice was loaded in the Kiwis’ favour as they enjoyed the first bite of the cherry in conditions tailor-made for high-scoring matches after dismissing the formidable Indian skipper. The Kane Williamson-led side made hay with a bumper strike within the tenth over before Kohli and Shubman Gill dug in to steer India to safer shores.

For the unversed, three of the four previous tournament games at the Wankhede have been won by the team batting first, with the exception Australia's stunning defeat of Afghanistan, where Glenn Maxwell's remarkable 201 not out secured a three-wicket victory.

India won all nine of their pool matches, but were pushed hard by New Zealand during a four-wicket success in Dharamsala last month. New Zealand, by contrast, lost four games before qualifying for the knockout stages.

Exactly four years ago, the Black Caps defeated India in a World Cup semi-final in Manchester that spanned two days because of rain. India are bidding for a third one-day international World Cup title to add to their 1983 triumph in England and 2011 victory over Sri Lanka in a Wankhede final.
