Sunrisers Hyderabad dump Lucknow Super Giants out of IPL with dominant six-wicket win thanks to some tight death-overs bowling and Abhishek Sharma’s quickfire 20-ball 59; LSG openers Mitchell Marsh (65) and Aiden Markram’s (61) blazing 115-run opening assault in vain

It was a must-win game for Lucknow Super Giants and they had done well to post a challenging total of 205-7 after being put in to bat. But the power-packed batting line-up of the already-eliminated Sunrisers Hyderabad made a mockery of the LSG bowling to win the match by six wickets and in the process end LSG’s slim hopes of making it to the Playoffs.
Klaasen shines
Riding on openers Mitch March and Aiden Markram’s brilliant partnership of 115, it seemed the home team had done well enough in registering their highest total at the venue this season. But SRH opener Abhishek Sharma’s 20-ball 59 virtually finished the match as a contest. After his departure, Heinrich Klaasen (47 in 28 balls) and Kamindu Mendis (32 retired hurt in 21 balls) ensured that the team did not face any hiccups on the way to victory by six wickets with 10 balls to spare.
SRH players celebrate as LSG skipper Rishabh Pant walks backs after being dismissed for seven in Lucknow yesterday
With this loss, their fourth in six home games, LSG have joined SRH, Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals on the sidelines of the IPL 2025, leaving the fourth playoff berth to be decided between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings had already qualified for the Playoffs on Sunday.
Despite the absence of unwell Travis Head, SRH batting lived up to the reputation and batted with fluency as they dispatched the LGS bowlers all around the park, much to the frustration of skipper Rishabh Pant. LSG still have two matches to play this season, against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on May 22 and against RCB at home on May 27, which would now be a mere formality for a team which had promised much at the start of the tournament but delivered little, just like their rivals SRH.
LSG lose momentum
LSG lost the initiative when, after being 108 for no loss in the first 10 overs, they managed 97-7 in the back half, as SRH bowlers pulled things back with some fine bowling.
Brief scores
LSG 205-7 in 20 overs (M Marsh 65, A Markram 61, N Pooran 45; E Malinga 2-28) lost to SRH 206-4 in 18.2 overs (A Sharma 59, H Klaasen 47, I Kishan 35, K Mendis 32; D Rathi 2-37) by six wickets
