Two days after mid-day had reported (in edition dated August 12) that St Anthony’s Church, Malwani, is in need of funds to conduct some restoration and construction work at their ageing premises and will be organising a mega prize-winning football tournament for it, a huge donation has come in from a sports aficionado.
On Thursday, Orlem-based Shreeji Construction stepped in to make a donation of Rs 5 lakh towards the cause. “I have always been a sports enthusiast and when I read that the St Anthony priests are raising funds through sports for the restoration of their church, it struck a personal chord, reminding me of my youthful sporting days. I immediately consulted my partner Bhushan Patil, who is also in the construction business, and we decided to help Fr Cajetan [Menezes, parish priest] with a small donation towards sports for a social cause,” Nimesh Desai, managing partner at Shreeji Construction, told mid-day.
Fr Menezes expressed his deep gratitude. “We are extremely grateful for this kindness. This donation is a huge boost for us. I hope more people come forward after reading about this and contribute towards the restoration of our church building,” said Fr Menezes on receiving the cheque from Desai.
The tournament, called the Anthonian-Indi Cup 2025 will see over 100 teams competing across various categories — veterans, men’s, women’s and U-17 teams — at the St Joseph’s Turf in Orlem, Malad, from August 15 to 17.
