Gunthardt, mentor in the 1990s to Steffi Graf, had been with Ivanovic since February and had helped the Serb raise her ranking from 65th to 24th.
Ivanovic, No 1 briefly in spring 2008, is the marquee name in the eight-woman field at the year-end championship for the 2010 winners of WTA International-level titles.
Others who will play when the round-robin begins Thursday are 40-year-old wild card Kimiko Date Krumm of Japan and Daniela Hantuchova.
