The 21-year-old River Plate star suffered lung damage as well as broken arms and a fractured right shoulder in the accident which happened when the car he was driving hit a tree in Sante Fe, in the north-east of the country.
Buonanotte, who is in a stable condition in a River Plate hospital, was the only passenger wearing a seatbelt.
"Diego remains in a stable condition, but we remain cautious knowing that the next 72 hours are the most critical," said Horacio Cavallieri, the doctor in charge.
