The father-son coach-player duo of Noor Mohammad and Mohammad Faiz ensured St Joseph's (Wadala) beat Pawar Public School (Bhandup) 51-04 to enter the quarter-finals of the Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) boys U-13 inter-school basketball tournament at Azad Maidan yesterday.

Faiz emerged with a fine show scoring 20 points even as his father egged on the team from the sidelines. Faiz's father Sheikh, a police constable posted at the Naigaon Police Headquarters in Dadar, has played the sport a the junior national level and has been coaching the school team for the last 15 years.

He has also been playing for the police team for the last 18 years and has begun caching them for the last four years. Thanks to his father's coaching profession, Faiz took to basketball at the age of five and has excelled in it.
"I have represented Maharashtra in national level tournaments as a youngster, but could not pursue the game due to financial constraints. I will ensure Faiz doesn't have to give up the game he loves early though," Noor told mid-day yesterday. "I hope to play for India one day," said 12-year-old Faiz.
