Controversy is following cricketer Shoaib Malik as if it was his own shadow ever since the news of his planned marriage to Sania Mirza became public. Currently in India, the former Pakistan skipper is alleged to have married Hyderabad resident Ayesha Siddiqui though the all-rounder has denied it.
There's every chance Malik might be confused about his next step but one man knows precisely what the cricketer needs to do.
Delhi-based lawyer Ramesh Gupta, who defended former India cricketer Manoj Prabhakar's case against his estranged wife, could well come to Malik's rescue. And he believes that just like in Prabhakar's case, a compromise can be reached here too.
"I received a call from Malik's brother-in-law Imran Zafar on Saturday. He is reaching Delhi in 48 hours. The case will be discussed then," Gupta said.
"At this stage, when both parties (Siddiqui and Malik) are issuing contrasting statements, nothing can be said. A compromise formula can always be worked out but I am not in a position to say what that settlement could be," he added.
Two years ago, Gupta had sent a legal notice to the Siddiqui family to withdraw the claim and apologise to Malik.
"If they don't do so, a valid case of defamation can be filed against them," he said.
Gupta is a former chairman of the Bar Council of Delhi and has appeared as defence lawyer in high-profile cases like the BMW hit-and-run case and is Rahul Mahajan's main lawyer in the ongoing trial over his alleged drug overdose.
