Former Mumbai University all-rounder Suryakant More passed away on Friday night after a prolonged illness. He was 77. Surya, as he was known in cricketing circles, played under Mumbai captains Manohar Hardikar, Ajit Wadekar as well as Hanumant Singh on the inter-office circuit where he represented Kohinoor Mills and State Bank of India

Former Mumbai University all-rounder Suryakant More passed away on Friday night after a prolonged illness. He was 77.

Surya, as he was known in cricketing circles, played under Mumbai captains Manohar Hardikar, Ajit Wadekar as well as Hanumant Singh on the inter-office circuit where he represented Kohinoor Mills and State Bank of India.

He also represented National Cricket Club and was known to give his 100 per cent every time he took the field. He later turned to coaching in order to maintain his association with the game.

"Surya was a hardworking, honest cricketer and a real asset to the team," his former National CC colleague recalled on Saturday.

Surya's brother Shankar played for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy and West Zone in the Duleep Trophy. The two brothers featured in the Mumbai University team against Madras University during the Rohinton Baria Trophy final which Mumbai University won by nine wickets at Delhi in January 1964.
