Lewis Hamilton sent up a loud cheer around the Silverstone circuit on Saturday by putting in a sensational lap in front of his home fans to seize a dominant pole position for Sunday's British Grand Prix.
The Mercedes driver set a scorching time of one minute, 26.600 seconds, over half a second clear of his closest challenger Kimi Raikkonen who will start on the front row alongside the Briton. The Finn's championship-leading Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel, who wasn't able to get his tyres warmed up enough, will start third.
Hamilton's lap was over two-and-a-half seconds quicker than the fastest time set at the track last year, which was also the fastest-ever around its current 5.8-kilometer long configuration in use since 2010.
It allowed the triple champion chalk up his 67th career pole, just one short of seven-time champion Michael Schumacher's record haul, and draw level with legendary Scot Jim Clark on five home pole positions.
