Djokovic and Federer have met 35 times in their careers with the Swiss star edging their rivalry by 18 wins to 17. Federer’s exploits in Shanghai have already ensured he will overtake Rafael Nadal as World No 2 on Monday and Djokovic is relishing the prospect of another clash.
Djokovic told atptour.com: “Roger is one of the best players ever in the game. There is no clear favourite. I think every time we play against each other it’s a thriller. It’s a really big challenge for both of us. We need to bring our A game in order to win.”
Frenchman Gilles Simon continued his fine week by dispatching sixth seed Tomas Berdych 7-6 (7/4), 4-6, 6-0. Simon will next face Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez, who came from behind to beat Russian Mikhail Youzhny 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
