Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi today congratulated Pakistani wrestler Azhar Hussain for winning the country's first gold medal in the sport in 40 years, saying it would promote friendship through sports between the two neighbours.
Azhar won the gold medal in 55kg freestyle category beating local favourite Anil Kumar in the quarterfinals.
"192 gold medals have been won so far and 33 countries have won some medal or the other. Pakistan has won its first gold medal in 40 years and we are very happy about it. It will promote friendship through sports," Kalmadi said at the customary media briefing here.
But Kalmadi could not avoid a goof up even in this routine congratulatory message.
"He beat an Indian Anuj Khan before getting the gold medal," he said, wrongly pronouncing the name of Anil Kumar. Kalmadi said Pakistan supported India's bid for the Commonwealth Games and he was glad that the Indian capital gave them their first wrestling gold in 40 years. "I cannot forget that Pakistan supported us in getting the Commonwealth Games bid, so we are happy that we are reciprocating it," he added.
