The Cooji Katrak-trained Moon Star was lucky to humble the Pesi Shroff-trained Camacho to win the Forbes India Million, the feature event of yesterday's eight-race card. Moon Star was ridden by David Allan who had finished runner up on both his earlier mounts in the day.
Both Moon Star and Camacho had their share of supporters and were sent out almost as joint favourites at 13 to 10 against. Moon Star hit the front from the word go, and maintained the upper hand until the distance post where he was seriously threatened by SA DeSousa astride Camacho, who inched closer with every stride.
However, Camacho perhaps could not take the pressure and hence drifted out in the final 100 meters, thereby losing precious ground, a crucial factor if one considers the fact that after traveling an entire mile, the final verdict was just 'head'.
Interestingly, exactly the same two trainers and jockeys had finished one-two, albeit in reverse order, only an hour earlier when Elizabeth, trained by Shroff and ridden by SA DeSousa, posted a very easy victory over the Katrak-trained and D Allan-ridden Star Of Venus in the Joss Gourmet Sprint. The Glory Of Dancer ufffd Queenscliff filly leisurely ambled in sixth position before emerging at the head of the pack at the distance post from where she just shot ahead to clock the brilliant time of 1:11.85 which was even faster than a Class I race, the Seth Ramnath Daga Trophy, which was won by Forest Flair (MA Roushan up) in 1:12.08; the fact that it had rained early morning rendering the track a bit moist speaks volumes about Elizabeth's class as a sprinter.
Cancellation hoax
Immediately after the last race, an SMS started making rounds that due to the marriage celebration of former revenue minister Narayan Rane's son at the racecourse, all activities, including the Thursday Mumbai races, have been cancelled. "There has not even been any talk or suggestion," said RWITC chairman Vivek Jain.
