Putrajaya: Nigel Lamb flew to a stunning victory at Malaysia's Putrajaya Lake yesterday after posting a time of 01:15.023 in the Final 4 round of the third race of the Red Bull Air Race championships. The win was Lamb's first ever in 44 attempts.

The 58-year-old beat the likes of Hannes Arch, the current leader in the pilots' championship standings, and Pete McLeod, who was placed first after the Super 8 race yesterday.

Meanwhile, Arch's second-place finish (0.574 seconds more than Lamb) was enough to take him five points clear of his nearest rival in the pilots' championship — Paul Bonhomme, who could only finish fifth yesterday.

There was also heartbreak for Pete McLeod, who was placed first in the Super 8 round, after being disqualified in the Final 4 round for exceeding the mandatory speed limit of 370 kmph at the start of the race.

Lamb, who has been to Malaysia extensively as a display pilot, said: "The weather conditions were ideal, we actually wanted it to be hotter.

We had a good race strategy throughout the weekend, and I felt like I really needed to go for it. I took some risks, but they paid off in the end." The next Red Bull Air Race will be held at Poland's Gdynia in July.
