Switzerland secured their World Group status for next season as Roger Federer thrashed Potito Starace 6-3, 6-0, 6-4 to secure an unassailable 3-1 lead in the play-off in Genoa yesterday.
Switzerland had won the first two singles matches on Friday with Italy staying alive thanks to a doubles win on Saturday but there was to be no further drama on the Genovese clay. Federer needed only one break to claim the first set and then wrapped up the second in just half an hour. Again he needed just the one break in the third. Even a rain break could not upset his rhythm.
"I felt good, the rain break allowed me to be get some energy back and I was able to play well, even if it wasn't always easy," said Federer.
"I'm happy to have given Switzerland the point for victory so that we could return to the World Group," said the world no 1, adding that not playing the doubles kept him fresh.
