Striker dons goalkeeper’s gloves in tie-breaker to help team beat St Thomas Academy (Goregaon) 3-1 for MSSA U-16 Div-IV title
Dadar Parsee Youth Assembly (DYPA) striker-turned-goalkeeper Shubham Chippa saved the day and ensured his team won the boys U-16 Div IV title of the Mumbai Schools Sports Association’s (MSSA) inter-school football tournament at Azad Maidan yesterday.

Shubham made a brilliant save and also scored in the tie-breaker to help his team register a 3-1 win over St Thomas Academy (Goregaon) after both teams were locked 0-0 at the end of regulation time.
Having won all their matches in regulation time, this was the first time the Dadar team were stretched into the tie-breaker thanks to some brilliant defensive work by the Goregaon, particularly goalkeeper Ishaan Singh, who constantly thwarted the attempts of the DYPA forwards.
In the tie-breaker, Shubham, Meet Jain and Devansh Haria scored for the Dadar outfit, while only Hrithik Kukian was on target for the Goregaon side.
DYPA coach Swapnil Kumtakar admitted the opponents had surprised them with their defence. “St Thomas boys did a good job in defence and marked our players well, but we had prepared for a tie-breaker situation too as we had not played this team before,” said Kumtakar, adding that he was grateful to the school authorities for providing a school bus for the team despite it being a working day.

“We normally use public transport to travel for our matches but since this was a final I requested our principal Diane Pereira to provide us the school bus. She not only obliged but also accompanied us to the final. It’s a roud moment for us,” said Kumtakar, whose boys earned a promotion to Div III with the win. St Thomas Academy coach Vilas Bhoir was proud of his boys despite the defeat. “I am happy with my team’s performance,” he said.
In the third place tie, Singapore International (Dahisar) beat St Joseph’s (Juhu) 5-4 via tie-breaker.
Varshi Tranbadiya, Harshvardhan Sharma, Rutvik Kalaria, Jatin Khilani, and Hrishikesh Iyer scored for winners, while Milbourne Gonsalves, Manav Roy, Cyrus Periera, Noel Plavila scored for the Juhu side.
