Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) star Tamika Catchings did not let her hearing impediment come in the way of her success. Overcoming her disability, she went on to win the Olympic gold thrice besides being a WNBA All-Star and five-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year.

"As I was born with a hearing and speech problem, I had to wear hearing aids and was always teased about it. So, sport became very important to me. In fact, I feel that the hearing disability was a blessing in disguise for me as I could concentrate more on playing and not be bothered about what people had to say about me," said the Indiana Fever forward, who was always keen to emulate her father Harvey, who played in the NBA for over a decade (1974-85).

Catchings (35), who tipped off the Reliance Foundation Jr NBA Championship yesterday at Dominic Savio School, Andheri (E), is eyeing a fourth Olympic gold at Rio 2016. "Last year was very tough for me as I didn't play the entire first leg of the season due to injury.

Then, after the London Olympics gold, I wanted to retire, but at the insistence of my teammate Diana Taurasi, I played on and decided that I will retire after the Rio Games on a high," said Catchings, admitting her fascination for India on her maiden week-long trip here.
