India’s Beijing Olympics bronze medal-winning boxer and Boxing Federation of India’s (BFI) newly-appointed chairperson of the Talent Hunt Commission and Olympic medallist Vijender Singh has warned of “big changes in store” for the men’s boxing team that returned home empty-handed from the recently-concluded World Championships in Liverpool.
While the women’s team clinched four medals (Jaismine Lamboria and Minakshi Hooda won gold medals in the 57kg and 48kg categories respectively while Nupur Sheoran (80+kg) claimed silver and Pooja Rani (80kg) won bronze), the 10-man men’s contingent failed to reach the podium. “I appreciate that the women performed very well. It’s amazing to have two world champions. Among the men, I believe we need to change the team and move forward. I’m already in touch with the federation and we’ll make the necessary changes,” Vijender told telecomasia.net.
The former World No. 1 Middleweight boxer added that further details of the changes that will be made known soon. “It’s confidential as of now. I have talked to BFI secretary, Pramod [Kumar] ji, and already conveyed my message to President Ajay Singh ji. You will find out very soon,” added Vijender.
