With internet connectivity playing a major role in India’s growth for the next few years, an official statement from the government stated, “India is one of the fastest-growing digital nations in the world."

As per the official statement, the massive momentum of internet subscribers across the nation is reflected in the staggering 1,002.85 (1.002 bn) million internet subscribers reported during April–June 2025, news agency IANS reported.

India's digital connectivity movement also highlighted the scale and impact of the country's digital revolution and growth story with advancements in technology.

Satellite internet, in keeping with the Viksit Bharat 2047's vision, is developing as a significant enabler of digital connectivity, providing dependable access to remote and underserved regions while enhancing important military and disaster response applications, reported IANS.

The official statement also said that rural internet penetration is about 46 subscribers per 100 people, emphasising the need for satellite internet to bridge the digital divide.

India's internet reach is steadily expanding thanks to ISRO's high-throughput satellites (HTS), which use superior spot-beam technology to provide faster speeds and more capacity. India has a fleet of 19 operating communication satellites, with GSAT-19, GSAT-29, GSAT-11, and GSAT-N2 specifically designed to increase broadband capabilities.

These satellites are intended to improve internet coverage in underserved areas, as well as enable in-flight communication, defence networks, and disaster management. They provide the backbone of India's satellite-based broadband infrastructure, supplementing ground-based networks such as BharatNet.

Another highlight is India’s technology and internet structure is its satellite communication (Satcom) infrastructure. Considering that India’s satellite structure is experiencing a transformation, the future of the country looks bright.

Over 10 satellite operators, including the licensed Starlink, have entered India, with the private sector allowed up to 100 per cent FDI, opening new doors of opportunity for satcom and internet advancements, reported IANS.

Despite big players entering India and the inclination of subscribers, the internet penetration still remains limited in certain regions of the country, underscoring the need for satellite internet to complement existing networks.

Satellite internet is an emerging technology that has the ability to bring access from space to every area, allowing India to achieve its vision of a digitally inclusive nation.

This makes it especially useful in distant communities, hilly terrains, border areas, and islands where terrestrial internet access is either impossible to obtain or monetarily unfeasible.

The statement further added, “Through the power of space technology, India is reinforcing its strategic autonomy and leadership in space-based communications, ensuring that the benefits of connectivity reach every citizen. From operationalising HTS to enabling private participation in satellite communications, the country is steadily bridging its digital divide."
