My husband and I have been married for a little over a year, and I am starting to resent him because of the way he has changed. He used to be nicer earlier but has become more sarcastic and harder to please. I don’t know why or how this happened, but it has begun to have an impact on how we communicate with each other. I don’t tell him too many things about my life now because I am always worried about how he may react. He doesn’t notice, but it’s sad because if this is how things are between us after just one year, I worry that it will get progressively worse and don’t know how we will manage to stay married for the rest of our lives. Should I just dismiss this as teething problems because it’s so early in our marriage, or am I right to be worried?
You’re right to be worried because whenever lines of communication are affected, at any stage of any relationship, there is a potential for anger and misunderstanding. There are always teething problems in any relationship, but these difficulties resolve themselves when they are dealt with through dialogue and openness. To not be able to talk about it, or to refuse to, is to worsen this situation and imagine that it will resolve itself. This is never the case. I suggest you tell your husband why you feel this way, consider speaking to a counsellor (alone or as a couple) and nip this in the bud. It’s only been a year and you have no reason to worry about where this is going because you both have time to fix it. All that matters is the intention.

How do I determine if a relationship will be serious or not?
Time usually helps you figure that out: cues from the person you’re with, coupled with a desire to spend more time with each other. Every relationship is different, but spending time together will bring you both closer to an answer.
