Is it normal for a partner to always refuse to have sex, unless coerced? My fiancé says he loves me a lot but is always looking for excuses to avoid physical intimacy. I have asked him what the problem is, but he is never clear about why this bothers him. It makes me feel as if I am doing something wrong, which creates other problems in our relationship that he isn’t even aware of. If this is a problem we can’t resolve before marriage, I am starting to worry about what our lives will be like in the future. If he can’t open up to me and tell me what is going on, how will we cope with other potential situations that can lead to more serious consequences for our future? What should I do?
You are right to worry because this isn’t something that can be swept under a carpet. You are also right about the need to resolve this before your marriage because the possibility of other situations cropping up is high. If your fiancé can’t communicate, talk about important things, or recognise that this is causing you some harm, he needs to be made aware of why your future is in jeopardy. You have the option of going ahead with the marriage and hoping that it may lead to a level of comfort that allows you both to find a solution to this, but that is a risk you alone will be taking. The idea of an engagement isn’t only to prepare for the financial or material aspects of a wedding ceremony; it is also to give you both a chance to address larger issues that can derail any relationship. This is too important to ignore so, if he can’t talk about it, suggest bringing in a counsellor.

How do I know if I am moving too fast with someone? What if I scare them away?
Why not just ask the person if they think you’re being too pushy? Direct questions can help avoid misunderstandings.
