A film in her sheath

Step into her office in Worli and you'll know what a film buff Bhavna Talwar is. Movie posters of La Dolce Vita, Federico Fellini's 8 u00bdu00a0u00a0and of course her baby Dharm adorn the walls, magazines like the American Cinematographer are neatly stacked on a desk, as areu00a0 books that easily weigh a few kilos.

WHO: Bhavna Talwar
WHAT: Talking about her love for films and her growth as a filmmaker
WHERE: At her Worli office

Captain, her pet dog is strutting around like he owns the place, and we wouldn't be surprised if his name is inspired from Captain Jack Sparrow. The mood in the office is clearly Happi even on a gruelling post-production weekday. Bhavna spares some time to discuss her work:

Take 2
Happi, that is a bittersweet comedy is very different from Dharm, though I've stuck to the same star cast with Pankaj Kapur and Supriya Pathak.

I've matured as a filmmaker, mainly because I've matured as a human being. I've become much calmer and contained. Making a film is like walking through fire. It's a scary, yet enlightening process. When you're making your first film, you build a world of expectations around it. It's only when you can deal with the monsters in your head that you start enjoying the journey.

I might have been upset by Dharm not making it to the Academy's, but I was very happy with the appreciation that it received from the global audience. I I raised my voice against injustice back then, because Eklavya made it to the Oscars only because of the contacts that it had.

Woman on top
I might not have those kind of contacts but I'm happy doing my job as a filmmaker. There might be a serious dearth of woman filmmakers in our country, but I just see myself as a director. The gender doesn't make any difference to me, though I enjoy being a woman. I also don't believe in stereotypes. I don't think that women are more sensitive in their treatment of films than the men. They make films that are just as beautiful. Cinema is a language, it doesn't matter who is essaying a film as long as it is a story well told.

Filmy journey
I've grown up watching films. As a family, we had to head to the theatre every Friday. There was Hindi music playing in the house all the time. So I became a film freak by default. I started my career as a film journalist and loved being on the sets of films. It felt like a part of me. I'm not surprised that I eventually got into filmmaking!
