Verdict: Watch it!
Take an outlandishly dressed cowboy who wants to protect cows instead of eating them, a businessman who wants to convert the whole world into pure non-vegetarians and what have you got? In three words, Quick Gun Murugan. Director Shashanka Ghosh has said that he had conceived this film fifteen years ago, and our one regret is that he didn't make this film sooner!
Many of us have loved movies like the 1966 thriller 'Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo' (The Good, The Bad and The Ugly) and as one of the characters in Quick Gun Murugan mentions, have even bunked class to watch this famous film. While you may not want to bunk class to watch this particular movie, it is definitely worth watching on a weekend.
All the characters indulge in quite a bit of overacting, but such is the nature of the movie that it doesn't jar you. Rice Plate Reddy (Naseer), for instance, is especially watchable in a scene in the beginning when he gets somebody to type out a resignation letter, while our hero Quick Gun Murugan (Dr Rajendra Prasad) excels in the scene where he tries to teach a would-be mugger how to pronounce a Tamizh word--and if you tell me that I should write it as 'Tamil' then I will shoot you dead.
Sergio Leone and many directors like him have produced many flicks labelled 'Spaghetti Westerns' which were so named because these Westerns were produced and directed by Italians. This movie verily deserves to be called an 'Idli Eastern'--or, since the director is Bengali, should we call it a 'Rasgulla Eastern'? But whatever you do, don't call it a 'Maacher Kalia Eastern' or Quick Gun Murugan, the Protector of Vegetarians, will shoot you dead. Mind it!
