A special court on Wednesday convicted suspended Assistant Commissioner of Police Sangram Singh for safeguarding fake stamp paper kingpin Abdul Karim Telgi inu00a0 the infamous stamp paper scam in 1997.


The court also convicted Telgi and seven others and reserved to announce the punishment for tomorrow.


However, the court acquitted MLA Roshan Baig's brother, Dr Rehan Baig, and Sub inspector VA Khan for lack of evidence.

Sangram Singh, the investigating officer in 1997, raided Shalimar hotel and seized fake stamp papers worth several lakhs of rupees. However, while filing the charge sheet he removed Telgi's name.

The stamp investigation team and the CBI, which also investigated the case, later found Singh guilty and filed a charge sheet against him.

Soon after the judgment, Singh and another accused in the case were taken into custody.u00a0 Telgi who heard the judgment appealed to the court to reduce the quantum of punishment as he was suffering from chronic diseases and his wife bed ridden.
