The drama surrounding the death of electrician Aji Thomas, 32 – whose body had been lying in the JJ Hospital morgue for the last 18 days – has finally come to an end. The supervisor with a Malabar Hills construction firm, Aji had died on June 29. According to police reports, he had died of electrocution, but the Thomas family had claimed foul play. After the court rejected the family's doubts as baseless, Aji's body was cremated at St Joseph's Church in Vikhroli.

In a writ petition filed in the HC earlier last week, Aji's wife, Sinsy Thomas, had asked the court to direct the police commissioner to reveal details pertaining to Aji's death, including the location of the accident. Besides seeking a copy of the panchnama. Sinsy had also sought that another autopsy be conducted on Aji to determine the cause of his death. But, dismissing her pleas, the court on Friday, allowed the petitioner to take Aji's body for cremation, but ruled that the deceased did not need to undergo another autopsy.

According to the petitioner's lawyer, advocate KP Reshma Ravi, the secretive behaviour of cops regarding Aji's death had led the Thomas family to consider foul play. "The cops were unwilling to share the investigation papers before the body was cremated. It's what led to all the confusion."
