MiD DAY report on a family's allegations of neglect at Sassoon prompts dean to set up panel to inquire into incident

TWO days after MiD DAY reported about a family's allegations of medical negligence by Sassoon hospital doctors, hospital authorities have set up a committee to look into the matter.

On December 6, MiD DAY had reported that that Tadiwala Road resident Nanda Gandhale had alleged that Sassoon doctors had left a plastic tube inside her granddaughter Purva Sarvodaya's urinary bladder that caused her discomfort for seven months. Gandhale said that Purva was operated at Ruby Hall Clinic last Tuesday when the doctors removed the piece of plastic from the girl's bladder.

Gandhale has said that Purva had been admitted to Sassoon hospital on May 30 following a fall and head injuries for which she was operated. According to her, doctors had inserted a catheter in the baby's bladder that wasn't removed properly and led to her condition.

Sassoon hospital dean Dr Arun Jamkar had said that it was highly improbable that it could have happened.
"I asked for the case details after reading about it in the newspaper. And admission records shows that baby was operated for head injury but no catheter was used. How do we use a catheter on such a small baby?" said Jamkar.

He added that a panel of experts had been set up to inquire into the incident and soon the family would be called and questioned on the subject as well. "We want to know if the baby was admitted to another hospital post her discharge and why the family is making such a statement," said Jamkar.
