Three animals, including a Siberian tiger and two lions have died at the Bannerghatta National Park since Saturday because of old age and organ failure.

King, a 21-year-old Siberian tiger, that was donated by Born Free Foundation, a London-based NGO, died yesterday. Four more tigers that were sent with King died earlier.

Likewise, Lakshmana, an 18-year-old lion that was seized from the New Golden Circus Company, too died recently. Shankara, another 23-year-old lion died yesterday morning.

All these animals were kept at the Rehabilitation Centre where visitors were not allowed.

Before death, King had stopped eating, and was put on a liquid diet by zoo officials

"All three of them were aged and had been sick for the past few days," said Dr BC Chittiappa, assistant director, Veterinary Services. King had started limping and had developed complications in his forelegs.

"Initially we gave himu00a0 painkillers, but after a few days the problem started in his hind limbs.

We thought he had developed a nervous problem, but when we sent his blood samples for test, it was found that his kidney was not functioning.

Thus, we started another treatment. However, he stopped eating, so we put him on fluids. But King finally died yesterday," said Dr Chittiappa.

According to the report, the other two lions also died of organ failure. Lakshamma had a cyst in his liver andu00a0 a failing kidney.

Shankara died because of 80 per cent lung calcification. "All these were under treatment for the past few days," said Dr Chittiappa.
