A cement-mortar churner-like device and an automated crane that resembles something out of an intergalactic film, lifting and dropping cement, stone, gravel, may not be the view a restaurateur would think of subjecting his patrons to. Definitely not Riyaaz Amlani, whose earlier initiative, Salt Water Grill at Marine Drive (shut shop now) was one of the few restaurants that romanced the city's coastline. Salt Water Cafe located at Bandra Reclamation, bears the brunt of the BMC unending road repairs. As we watched the bylane turn into a chaos of slow-moving traffic, cantankerous drivers and hard-working labourers tip-toeing around, we drowned ourselves in the delectable food, drinks and desserts that offered a sweet departure from this face-

cringing reality.
On the menu: We missed the cut off time for lunch by 30 minutes (3.30 pm), so, our order was restricted to all-day-dining choices: Salads and Cold Plates, Sandwiches, Burgers, Breads and Bakes, and Desserts. Our initial orders, the Caesar Chicken Salad (Rs 250) and the Spare Rib Burger (Rs 280) were fresh, well cooked and flavourful. The Open Grilled Veggie Pesto Toast topped with Mozzarella (Rs 260) was a great veggie find on the menu; make sure you devour it before it turns cold. The Jerk Chicken Burger (Rs 280) was aromatic, succulent
and wholesome.
Today's special: As our eyes darted to the blackboard, the Cheese Platter scrawled with chalk seemed a magical fit with our wine-based cocktails: Melon Sangria, Sangria Rosso and Mimosa, all for Rs 280. Gorgonzola, Brie, Emmenthal and Grana Padana made their way to our table.
Dessert, coffee, and nothing less of a pedicure: The Orange-Espresso Cake (Rs 110) was not heavily immersed with orange nor espresso flavours, but was yet finger-licking good; the Hazelnut Flan (Rs 110) was also delicious, but a tad sweet for our taste. After ending the meal with a classic Jamaican Blue Mountain (Rs 250), we made a "dash" for the valet. The sprightly attitude caught my companion in a soup, or rather wet cement, should we say. But, the stewards and security emerged with a makeshift pedicure stainless steel dipping bowl of water to clean her feet in. Kudos to the service; we walked away clean, content and guffawing at the mishap.
