Karol Bagh goldsmith allegedly kills nephew who was shoddy at work

Fourteen-year-old Krishna had dreamt of making it big when he left his home in Bengal's Midnapore district to live and work with his goldsmith uncle in New Delhi. But fate played a cruel game and Krishna was allegedly beaten to death by his uncle within months of shifting to the capital; just because he was an incompetent apprentice.

1) Krishna was learning goldsmith's work from his uncle Tapan Manjhi

'Boy was beaten'

The police said a day before his death the boy was allegedly beaten by his uncle, who designed ornaments for jewellery shops in Karol Bagh. On Monday evening, the boy was rushed to a doctor and was put on medication.

Reportedly, Manjhi was teaching Krishna the art of cutting gold.

The police said Manjhi confessed to have beaten his nephew but he insisted the boy had died of a cardiac arrest. Cops said Manjhi had also told them the boy had fallen down from the staircase a few days ago.

2) Fed up with the boy's failure to learn, Manjhi used to beat him. On Monday too Krishna was beaten severly by his uncle

Neighbours blame uncle

However, neighbouring shopkeepers, who saw the boy's body, have told the police the victim had injury marks on his hands and feet. Cops said the neighbours also hinted the boy had been causing loses to his uncle.

"For the last few days the boy was learning the art of making ornaments. But he was not very competent and his uncle had been suffering loses because of his shoddy work. Manjhi had been beating him as well. Today, when the police took away the body we saw injury marks on it," said Chandi Charan Das, who is a jeweller at Karol Bagh and the general secretary of the Delhi Swarankar Sangh, which is the jewellers' association of Delhi.u00a0

However, on Tuesday, when the body was recovered, there was no bleeding or fresh injury marks on it. We have not registered a case of murder but booked Manjhi under 174 CrPC, wherein the death will be investigated but action will only be taken after the post-mortem report of the victim arrives. The body has been sent to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital for post-mortem," said a cop from the Karol Bagh police station.
