Notwithstanding the windy conditions and the partisan crowd egging their rivals on, the trio of Rajat Chouhan, Sandeep Kumar and Ratan Singh Khuraijam defeated their Colombian rivals Juan Carlos Carrasquilla, Camilo Andres Cardona and Jos Carlos Ospina 215-210.
Chouhan, Kumar and Khuraijam took a slender 52-50 lead in the first round. However, in the second round the home team, buoyed by the crowd, made a sensational comeback to lead 104-102 on the back of a score of 54 against India’s 50.
The Indians, however, came back stronger to edge out the crowd favourites 158-156 in the last round. France clinched the gold medal in the men’s category later in the day.
Meanwhile, India are still in the hunt for at least two more medals — in the women’s recurve team event and the mixed team event.
Former World No 1 Deepika Kumari, Laishram Bombayla Devi and Rimil Biruly are assured of a medal as they take on the top seeded Chinese team in the summit clash.
Elsewhere, Kumari will pair up with Atanu Das in the mixed team bronze play-off match.
