YOUR Metro train running late again? Well, in over 260 such instances over a period of three months, the reason behind these delays was an unruly fellow passenger rather than a technical glitch.

According to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), there have been several instances where Metro passengers have pushed the emergency alarm button for no reason.

"Delhi Metro trains lost over 13 hours of operational time due to misuse of the passenger emergency alarm button by commuters during the last three months. Passengers pressed the button 260 times, delaying train services from two minutes to five minutes every time this button was misused," said Delhi Metro spokesperson Anuj Dayal.

Many commuters in the past few months have complained of inordinate delays and poor frequency of trains. The DMRC has found that the misuse of the emergency alarm system has resulted in cancellation of as many as 200 train trips.

"This affected 300,000 passengers since each train trip can carry up to 1,500 passengers. Every misuse of the emergency alarm caused bunching on the (Metro) line because trains behind are also held up till the effected alarm system is reset," Dayal explained.

Explaining the entire process, a Metro official said: "As the passengers press the emergency alarm button it alerts the driver. And the driver cannot proceed without ensuring that everything is fine. So it causes a delay in the service. The entire process takes at least two minutes and in a few recent cases it has taken up to 15-20 minutes."

The DMRC also pointed out that out of these 260 cases maximum were on the Dwarka-Noida route, which caters to maximum commuters.

The Delhi Metro is planning to crackdown on such offenders. Any passenger found misusing the passenger emergency alarm system can be prosecuted under the DMRC's Operations and Maintenance Act, 2002.
