Asks government to cancel permit of drivers if found overcharging

"We are thankful to the government for the fare hike and want it to punish offenders. Those who are maligning our image by harassing commuters should be taught a lesson. We request the government to change the present permit conditions and cancel permits of those who are found indulging in cases of overcharging and refusal," said, Rajinder Soni, General Secretary, Delhi Autorickshaw Sangh.

As per current rules, in case of refusal and overcharging, a fine is imposed on the auto driver. Currently, the fine imposed on such violation of rules is Rs 5,500. However, the passenger complaints are put up for scrutiny by the enforcement wing of the transport department.

u00a0"The government should change the permit conditions. All drivers are not the same. The main culprits are those auto drivers who work under the pressure of some financer or mafia," added Soni.
The new fares for auto rickshaws and taxis came after a Rs 5.60 per kilogram rise in the price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) last week.u00a0

"However, there will be no increase in fare rates of Delhi Transport Corporation and private Blueline buses. The losses to be incurred by the DTC will be borne by the state government," said Delhi Transport Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely.

The Delhi government on Tuesday increased the fares of autos and taxis by 35 per cent. Now, Rs 19 will be charged for the first two km against Rs 10 for one km in case of autos. For the next kilometre, the fares have been increased to Rs 6.50 against Rs 4.5 km earlier. For black and yellow taxis, the new rates will be Rs 20 per km and Rs 11 charged for additional km.

Meanwhile, the general public reacted strongly to the auto fare hike.

"We have failed to understand whether the Delhi government is working for the benefit of Delhiites or arm twisting auto and bus unions or private power companies.

Hike in prices of diesel, cooking gas, school fees and milk have already upset our household budget. Now, hike in auto prices will only add to our woes," said Manmohan Mehra, secretary,u00a0 Kiran Vihar RWA in east Delhi.

Within six months, all autos would be equipped with the Global Positioning System (GPS), which would be made mandatory or else the permits would be cancelled. The installation charges will amount to Rs 6,000.
