When you hear the word Jazz, the first thing that pops to mind are African-Americans rendering soulful tunes.

What is lesser known is that the Dutch also boast of a vibrant jazz scene and even have their own North Sea Jazz Festival. This evening, you can watch a performance by Ronald Douglas and The Dutch Jazz Quartet, a jazz musical band from Holland. Considering they are aged 35 years and above, they consider themselves as "young at heart" and their themes are on evergreen love stories.
The band includes Ronald Douglas (vocalist), Jasper Sossers (pianist), Hans Mantel (bass), andu00a0 brothers, Sjoerd Dijkhuizen (saxophone) and Gijs Dijkhuizen (drums).
This evening, they will be performing an array of music from various jazz composers like Duke Ellington and Sarah Vaughan as well as some standard tunes especially chosen from American music. "It's so hard to tell which composers and musical numbers we will be playing because it depends on the day we will be performing, the room we will be staying in, the atmosphere and the crowd," states Hans Mantel.
This band of musicians has performed all over the world for the last 15 years and Mantel is all praise for the talented bunch. "Sossers is a freelance musician with great technical creativity while the brothers, who are the youngest in the group, have a versatile musical knowledge. Douglas has a super voice and can tell great love stories in a song. I have been a musician for almost 30 years," he adds.u00a0
The Qaurtet had wanted to do this tour for a long time but due to other commitments, it just never took off.
As far as their love for India is concerned, each one has a specific interest. Speaking in his trademark heavy Dutch accent, Mantel says he is impressed by the Indian audience's knowledge of music. "We have been performing since October 28 and not once did we feel that we are playing in front of ignorant people. We love the fact that the audience is highly communicative and sophisticated."
