Banks to remain closed on August 22 and 23

Not a single bank in Mumbai will be operational on August 22 and 23, as employees of all banks across the country will go on a country-wide strike on these days against the government policy to privatise the public sector banks

Banks to remain closed on August 22 and 23

Bank employees of Mumbai have decided to gather at Azad Maidan on August 22 to protest proposed Banking Law (amendments) Bill, which is expected to come up in the parliament during the monsoon session, most likely on August 21.


Vishwas Utagi, secretary, India Bank Employees Association, said “No bank employee across the country will work on August 22 and 23 as a protest to the attempt of government to transfer decision making power and ownership of Indian banks to foreign entities.u00a0In addition, in Mumbai, we have decided to hold protest meeting at Azad Maidan on August 23.” The bill seeks to amend various provisions of the Banking Regulations Act, 1949 and Bank Nationalisation Act, 1970 and 1980.u00a0
