A 30-year-old driver was arrested by the Vakola police for allegedly running over and killing a cat on Wednesday. The incident took place just outside the building, Green Field, at Vakola in Santacruz (East). The driver was identified as Rajan Yadav, who was driving for Bholenath Mishra, alias Bhola Mishra, a BJP member attached to the Kalina constituency.

The cat had been sitting close to the security cabin near the gate, when the driver allegedly took a sharp turn, not bothered about hurting it. According to an eyewitness, the cat tried to escape, but got caught in the rear wheel and died on the spot.

An eyewitness who lives in the same residential society said, “On Wednesday evening, the driver and the car’s owner ran over a cat while entering the society. The driver did not stop to help the cat, and left it to die.” She called officials at the NGO, Peace For Animals Welfare Association (PAWA), who reached the spot the very next day.

PAWA president, Salim Charania, said, “I got a call from the eyewitness who said that a cat had been run over, and asked me for help to file a case. It is not the first incident when the accused, Rajan Yadav, has hit an animal. He had already done it twice earlier.”

“I personally called the city police control room number, when Mishra began misbehaving with us at the society gate. I took both of them to Vakola police station, where a complaint was registered against his driver.”

“After verifying all the facts from the NGO and society members, we registered a case against Rajan Yadav under various sections of IPC including 279, 428, and under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act,” said Police Sub-Inspector Sachin Gawde.
