BJP-Shiv Sena combine leading in 42 of 48 seats in Maharashtra

Mumbai: The BJP-Shiv Sena led alliance looks set for its best ever performance in Maharashtra leading in 42 of the total 48 seats, according to trends till 11 am.

BJP candidates are leading in 23 and Sena nominees in 19 seats.

Congress, which contested 27 seats, is ahead in one seat while NCP, which contested 21 seats, is leading in three seats.

The notable BJP candidates leading included former party president Nitin Gadkari from Nagpur and the party's deputy leader in Lok Sabha Gopinath Munde, who is attempting to retain his Beed seat in Marathwada.

Prominent among those trailing are Union minister Sushilkumar Shinde from Solapur, Chhagan Bhujbal from Nashik. 

Maharashtra Industries Minister Narayan Rane today resigned from his post in the wake of defeat of his son and sitting MP from Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg seat, Nilesh Rane on his home turf by a Shiv Sena candidate Vinayak Raut. Rane has forwarded his resignation to the chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, sources said. When contacted, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Manikrao Thakre confirmed Rane's resignation. "Although Rane has tendered his resignation over the loss of his son Nilesh, the same will not be accepted. We will hold discussions with him and find a way out," Thakre said.

In Mumbai North Central, Poonam Mahajan had polled 2,21,212 votes as against Priya Dutt of the Congress who got 96,836 votes. Already accepting her defeat, party MP Priya Dutt said people's mandate had been decisive. "I humbly accept their verdict and thank them for all the support. I congratulate Poonam for her victory and extend her my best wishes," she said.

Mahadev Jankar of Rashtriya Samaj Paksha, an ally of the Sena-BJP has established a lead over NCP leader Supriya Sule in Baramati. Jankar had polled 95,334 votes, followed by Sule with 88,552 votes, till reports last came in.

In North Maharashtra, BJP is leading by 3,854 votes in Dhule. In Dindori, Harishchandra Chavan of BJP retained the seat polling 5,42,784 votes. While NCP's Bharati Pawar polled 2,95,165 votes. In Amravati, Shiv Sena is ahead by 5,831 votes. In Maval, Laxman Jagtap of PWP is leading. In Shirur constituency, Shiv Sena's Shivajirao Adhalrao Patil leading with 1,88,433 votes.

Maharashtra PWD Minister Chhagan Bhujbal was today defeated by Shiv Sena's Hemant Godse in Nashik Lok Sabha constituency by a margin of 1,87,336 votes. Godse polled 4,94,435 votes as against Bhujbal's 3,07,399.

NCP's Udayan Raje Bhosale has retained his Satara Lok Sabha seat by a margin of 3,66,594 votes. Bhosale, a direct descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj trounced his BJP rival Purshottam Jadhav. Bhosale polled 5,22,531 votes while Jadhav polled 1,95,937 votes, as per figures given by State election office.

In Mumbai South Central, Shiv Sena's Rahul Shewale defeated Congress's Eknath Gaikwad by 1,38,046 votes. Shewale polled 3,80,747 votes as against Gaikwad's 242701 votes.

Kirit Somaiya of BJP is leading by 29,007 votes over Sanjay Dina Patil who has polled 16,155 votes. AAP's Medha Patkar is in the third position with 6,460 votes.

In Mumbai North, BJP's Gopal Shetty is leading by 2.75 lakh votes over his rival Sanjay Nirupam of Congress with 89,000 votes.

In Mumbai North West, Gajanan Kirtikar of Shiv Sena has established a lead of over 1,61599 votes. MP Gurudas Kamat has conceded defeat and congratulated the winner Gajanan Kirtikar. He stated that he accepts the verdict of the people with all humility and assures the citizens of continued active participation in public life, with a view to help the citizens of Mumbai in whatever way possible.

Independent candidate Rakhi Sawant has got 794 votes till now.

In Bhiwandi, BJP is leading by 19,902 votes, in Kalyan, Shiv Sena has established a lead while in Thane, Shiv Sena's Rajan Vichare was leading by 19,438 votes.

In Pune, Anil Shirole (BJP) is leading by over 25,000 votes.
