Bodies begin to rot as Sassoon morgue runs out of space

On Tuesday night, the scene at the morgue of Sassoon general hospital was one of utter mayhem as relatives, police and ward boys pleaded the staffers of the morgue to accept dead bodies for cold storage but everyone's request was denied. As the cold storage is packed to capacity, staffers at the morgue expressed their inability to accept any more bodies. In fact when MiD DAY visited the premises at 12.30 am on Wednesday, a body was lying in the open where it was left to rot.

When asked, staffers said that it was a case of railway accident. The body was brought yesterday afternoon but was left in the open as there was no space. In fact by night, morgue staff said that they were so bogged down by complaints and even threats of relatives that they agreed to accept bodies if relatives agreed to keep them in the open and took responsibility in writing if the body decomposed.

The staffers at the morgue blamed the civic corporation for the situation.

"The municipality is not coming regularly and even when they do come, they take only 2-3 bodies. How will there be space? Of 32, 24 cold storage containers are available for use and we have 28 bodies currently lying here and another three are dead in the ward. So tell me how to adjust all the dead in this one room?" questioned a staffer at the morgue.
