A film which opened and gained much appreciation in Cannes Film Festival, won many awards in many prestigious international film festivals is all set to release on 5th may. The film is based on four most celebrated and controversial stories of Manto. Shoib; who has played the character of Ishar Singh in Khol Do is very much excited as film has won many awards as 'best director in London Asian Film Festival Shoib also won 'best actor in critic's in Rajasthan International Film Festival.

Here are extracts from a conversation with Shoib about Mantostaan

Q. Tell me something about your character in Mantostaan
A. Working for any other character is a different thing but when it comes to Manto's story character it's a not easy, because his characterization, different and raw. It was very difficult to imagine that how would have been imagination of Manto when he was writing, but I tried my best understand and feel. Somewhere one plus point for me was the director of the film Rahat Kazmi, was very clear about what we are going to make and how we are going to work on it. As an actor I believe that the most subtle character is the most difficult because sometime there is no need of dialogues to convey the story, I love to play different shades and challenging characters.

Q. How you get the role in Mantostaan
A. When director Rahat Kazmi offered me the role of Ishar Singh, it was like winning an Oscar award for me because if any director who is making film on Manto's story and offering you the role is not a small or common decision, I felt honored to get such a challenging and demanding role.

Q. Any preparation for the character
A. I look average and common but the character was very much raw, dangerous, confuse, inhuman but in an extreme subtle way. I have done many things to get into the character, gaining weight about 10 to 12 kg, working on face and beard, body language and the most important thing to understand the graph of the script and character. I have read the story about 200 times and tried to understand the detailing of script and character, director Rahat Kazmi was the main key to unlock and open all the answers of my questions.

Mantostaan has been awarded as best film twice, best actor/actress thrice and best director at London Asian film festival. The film will open in Indian cinemas from 5th May.
