A student lost sight in his left eye after he was beaten by a school teacher in Jharkhand's Lohardagga district, an official said Monday.

Akash Kumar, a Class 7 student of Saraswati Sishu Mandir of Lohardagga district, about 70 km from here, was beaten with a stick by Anita Verma April 17. Akash's left eye was severely injured and doctors say that he will not recover his eyesight in his left eye as the retina was badly damaged.

"There is no hope that Akash will recover his eyesight. The retina of the left eye has been badly damaged as the lens cornea has come out. The eye has been damaged more than 95 percent. We have suggested he be taken to Chennai or to New Delhi for further treatment," B.P. Kashyap, head of the Kashyap Eye Hospital here, told IANS.

"My son was beaten up with a stick by Anita Verma, a school teacher. She hit Akash with a stick on his left eye. Akash complained that he was not able to see anything when he returned home on Saturday," said Akash's father, Vijay Mahto.

He said: "Doctors have advised us to take Akash to Chennai or New Delhi, but we are not in a position to take him to either of the places for better treatment."

Mahto, who is a farmer, is the father of three children.

The education department is shocked about the incident. "We will probe the incident and suitable action will be taken against the school management and the teacher," said P.P. Jha, district superintendent of education (DSC) of Lohardagga.
