The Red Pope has come from Vatican City to mark 50 yrs of priesthood

Last evening, just for a moment, Cardinal Ivan Dias ceased to be the Red Pope and returned to his roots of the simple Bandra boy he was back in the 1940s. "It's so good to be back in Bombay," he said to the thousands gathered to see him at the Stanislaus school grounds in Bandra.

Celebrating 50 years of priesthood, Dias is currently in Mumbai to mark the occasion with fellow ordained Fr Trevor Pereira and Fr Jude D'souza.u00a0

Dias had harsh words for last year's incidents of violence in Orissa and Karnataka saying that it had "tarnished" the reputation of India and the world expected "a more responsible and plausible response from authorities concerned".

Who is Cardinal Ivan Dias?
Born April 14, 1936, in Bandra, Dias was ordained as a priest in Mumbai on December 8, 1958. Dias began work as Archbishop of Bombay on March 13, 1997. He is close counsel to Pope Benedict XVI. Dias is known worldwide as the Red Pope because of the post he carries as the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelizations of the Peoples at the Vatican. The term was used to signify how the cardinal dressed in red had control over the entire church.
