The accused, Javed Mohammad Shamshad Khan, 22, was arrested by the Sion police on Wednesday from Bhagalpur in Bihar. The accused is history sheeter and has case registered against him at Antop Hill and Wadala TT police station.

Khan committed a crime last month when he tried to rob 73-year-old lady, Chandraben Mehta, a resident of Parimal building when she was going to Jain temple. Khan followed her and then pushed her. As she fell unconscious, he snatched the gold chain worth 44k rupees and escaped. Mehta was taken to hospital for treatment and later FIR was filed at Sion police station.

The incident was captured in CCTV camera installed in the area. The video even went viral on social media with police facing criticism for not doing much to stop such menace in Sion Matunga area. Infact, even the accused got the video on his phone which prompted him to leave the city.

Under pressure, Sion police alerted their informers. The cops also went through the CCTV footage and zeroed in on the accused. On reaching the house of the accused in Dharavi area, they found out that he had already fled to Bhagalpur in Bihar. The family members told cops that they were unaware of his criminal background.

A team headed by API Santosh Gaikwad of Sion police station was sent to Bhagalpur from where the accused Khan was arrested. He was hiding at one of his relatives house. He confessed to cops that a week after the crime, he received his video on whatsapp. Therefore he had decided to leave the city. He was presented before the court and remanded to police custody.
